This just came across on Twitter about Tony Gwynn:

    Eric Edholm ‏@Eric_Edholm 7m
In 323 AB vs. Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez and Greg Maddux, Tony Gwynn struck out a total of 3 (!!!!) times. Two vs. Glavine.

    Prayers to the Gwynn Family.

Wow, that's just incredibly sad and sudden news. I had no idea he was in ill health. Agreed, best pure hitter I've ever seen as well. I've always felt that Gwynn would have hit .400 in 1994, but was robbed by the Players Strike. He went into the strike with his average on the rise at .394. Fans were really cheated out of what could have been a very special year by the man.

I'll be 54 in two days...that is way too damn early to go. Prayers and heartfelt sadness to his family. One of baseball's all-time greats, on and off the field. Class personified.

Yep and one of the greatest hitters I've had the pleasure to watch play. Sorry to hear of his passing, he'll be missed.

    My condolences to his family.

I always respect hall of famers who play their whole career for one team not named the Yankees. A lot of times you hear people say a player was ahead of their time but Gwynn was a player behind his time in that he was a great pure hitter instead of the slugger every wants to be these days.

Some type of mouth cancer. People said it was link to the smokeless tobacco or something like that.

Some of the numbers I've seen about Gwynn's career this morning have been something else.

One game in his career that he had three strikeouts
Season high he had in strikeouts was 40.
The Braves trio of B.J Upton, Justin Upton, and Dan Uggla combined for more strikeouts last season than Gwynn had in his entire career.

Shows that you don't have to hit 40 homers a season to be considered a great player.

He was slugging .568 during the strike year, too. He might've had 50 doubles that year.

A world-class player, and by all accounts a good guy, too.
