MINORS FINAL 6/24: Get excited about Arias; Fulenchek debuts

With all the buzz about what Jose Peraza, age 20, is doing in Mississippi, a look farther back is revealing another multi-tool talent who is wowing the Braves.

Centerfielder Elias Arias, a Dominican who turns 20 June 30, is a lefty hitting centerfielder for the Dominican team. Signed as a free agent in October, his pro debut has been nothing short of awesome. In his last 11 games, he has seven multi-hit games, including back-to-back three-hit efforts. Monday, he reached base five times while raising his average to .411.

In 18 DSL games, he has 30 hits, driven in 14 runs, scored 17, hit a couple of homers and stolen 11 bases. After reaching base five times Monday, his OBP is .500, his OPS 1.062. He has 13 walks to eight strikeouts.
Going more detail, he's hitting .520 with runners on base, .529 with RISP, an amazing .615 average against lefties.

    ------------

2nd-round pick Garrett Fulenchek made his pro debut with the GCL Braves Tuesday, striking out the side.

Arias signed late in the international signing process and is a year or two older than most of the kids who end up signing. I always wonder about those guys and how they fell through the cracks. They don't move many kids out of the DSL mid-season, but given how Arias is performing, he's making a case to head stateside.

Dykstra with a double, steals a base, and scores a run. Sounds about right if anyone remembers how his dad played.

He played SS today as well. Had 2 errors but the Braves are gonna try him at several different positions.

Christian Bethancourt and Jose Peraza will play in the Futures All Star Game.

I'm curious to see if Peraza keeps hitting like he has at AA if he will actually see some time in Atlanta this year, or if they will put him in the AFL this fall with an eye towards him making it out of spring training next year.

They should retire Bethancourt's jersey. Is this his third or fourth one?

I see Northcraft has been promoted to Gwinnett. He's gonna end up being a decent bullpen piece for some major league team. Outside shot as a starter.

AAA rotation now looks like Schlosser, Rodriguez, Martin, Maya and Northcraft. Wonder if Thomas is hurt. Hasn't pitched since June 15.

I see that Kevin Josephina is now in the DSL. I believe he was on the GCL roster prior to that season starting and it looks like he joined the team a week into the season. It looks like he, Salazar, Bryan Phillips, and Mattia Mercuri are shuffling around the infield game-to-game.
