Center for the Rest of 2014

Bonifacio started in center last night. We've reached a point in the season where we have to throw whatever we've got against the wall and hope something sticks. I'm hopping Bonifacio plays most of the games there the next few weeks. I wouldn't bury BJ because there is a chance (however slight) he will catch on fire and out-perform Bonifacio. But I think Bonifacio should be the primary center fielder, sort of like the two week trial Pastornicky had at second earlier this year.

Unlike the situation at second, we don't have a La Stella caliber candidate waiting in the wings in AAA. But we should use the September roster expansion to call up Constanza and Cunningham. Again it is a bit of throwing stuff at the wall and hoping something sticks. Constanza got off to a slow start in April, but since then has hit well. He is good in the clutch and has strong talismanic qualities. Not the best defensive center fielder. If we go with him, I would play him in right and use Jason in center.

Cunningham got off to a strong start, but slumped in the middle of the year. Apparently an injury had something to do with that slump. He went on the DL for a time, and has had a strong July since coming off it.

We have some options. None ideal. But we've reached a point where all options need to be explored.

I haven't mention Peraza. Part of it is his youth. Part of it is the limited experience in AA. Part of it is the total lack of playing time in center. I don't think it would be a good idea to play him in center this year at the major league level. I would have him play some center and third (in secret of course) in Venezuela this winter and give him a look at those positions in spring training.

nsacpi, I have a hard time imagining that any of the names you mentioned couldn't out-perform BJ.

You're probably right. Look at 2014 OPS:

    BJ .604
    Bonifacio .691
    Contanza (AAA) .686
    Cunningham (AAA) .718

As a rough rule, a 10% haircut to AAA numbers will give you the major league equivalent. Everyone on this list at this point would be expected to hit better than BJ.

I'd agree overall. Also BOssman hasn't sucked as hard as Uggla did.

Really just about what BOssman needs is his power back.

Boni is usually pretty average at best but this year it looks like he will be a 2.5ish WAR player, depending on playing time and BJ has been a NEGATIVE.....so yeah, this shouldn't really be a question. Plus BJ is negative in fielding as well and Boni is a big plus.

The problem is that large sample (which is still pretty small sample) Bonifacio is a slightly below average CF. While Bossman on a large sample is slightly above average. This year is likely an aberration brought on by his offensive woes.

I would just go with Bonifacio from here on out. But lawdy please bat him 8th.

BJ can git. Or figure out how to hit like a leadoff guy and stop trying to be a terrible homerun hitter who k's every at bat.
    thank you weso1!

    I would go

    Jason
    TLS
    Justin
    Freddie
    Gattis
    Johnson
    Simmons
    P
    CF

My point of contention with your lineup is you're relying on the L/R break when 3 of our 5 best hitters are lefties so either you go

    TLS/Jason
    Justin
    Freeman/Jason
    Gattis
    Freeman/Jason/TLS

in some combination or you move Freddie or Jaosn to 4.

Though I wouldn't mind hitting Jason 3, let him take control of the team. But I'd bat Freddie 4 in that scenario.

The reason I did that was to make it somewhat work for our manager. He loves that sort of thing. And Jason needs to be batting third, in my opinion. Just let him run with it.
