717 Minors Report: Braves Add Another Talented Arm Thru Indy League

Wichita Wingnuts' left-hander Ryan Hinson was abruptly pulled from his scheduled start last Thursday night against Kansas City. No, Hinson was not injured. And no, the Wingnuts were not benching the Rawlings American Association Pitcher of the Month from June. Rather, the 6’3” left-hander received word that the Atlanta Braves had purchased his contract.

Prior to Thursday night, Hinson had made 51 starts for the Wingnuts from 2011-2013, compiling a 27-15 record. This season has been Hinson’s best: In 10 starts, Hinson pitched to a 7-2 record with two complete games and one shutout and a league-best 1.53 ERA. Hinson also ranks seventh in the American Association with 57 strikeouts. The 26-year-old lefty allowed two or fewer earned runs in nine of 10 starts and did not allow more than three earned runs in any of them. Hinson was named the American Association's Pitcher of the Month for June.and . He also leaves the American Association with the league’s best ERA (1.53).

A native of Rock Hill, SC, Hinson threw a complete game, six-hit shutout last Saturday versus Amarillo to become the Wingnuts' all-time leader in wins (27). Hinson also ranks first in team history with 234 strikeouts.

Hinson was originally a member of the San Diego Padres’ organization, after being drafted by them in the 10th round of the 2009 MLB June Amateur Draft. The Padres selected Hinson out of Clemson University ue.

The Madison Saltdogs are proud to announce that center fielder Daniel Carroll signed with the Atlanta Braves Saturday. Carroll is the fifth player Lincoln has sold to a Major League Baseball organization since the season began

Carroll , who debuted with Class A Rome Wednesday, was hitting .303 with seven home runs, 30 RBI and 22 stolen bases (which ranked second in the American Association).

The 24-year old from Moreno Valley, Calif. joins a big league organization for the second time, as he spent the first six years of his career with the Seattle Mariners.

Carroll, a former third round pick out of high school in 2007, joins Dennis Raben (Royals), Joe Bisenius (Braves), Eddie McKiernan (D-backs) and Jose Gil (Yankees) as players that started the 2013 season with the Saltdogs before being purchased by MLB clubs.

How many guys are we pulling from the Indy leagues now, compared to in the past? Is this a newer thing or just something that your coverage has made me more aware of?

I think indy league additions are up. Probably a cheap supplement to the minors if I had to guess. Like low cost gambling if there is such a thing.

Cheap is the key word. You are buying contracts like old, old school baseball and not negotiating with the player. And yes, these signing are way up since 2011. Update has another one, an outfielder.
