MINORS FINAL 6/30: Edgerton red-hot; TWO STEALS OF HOME MONDAY

Tip of the hat to Jordan Edgerton

The nuts and bolts are this: Jordan Edgerton is a 6-1, 190 third baseman out of Mt. Holly, NC, by way of one of the "other" Carolina schools, UNC-Pembroke. The school is a historically an American Indian school of higher learning, and their nickname, PC folks, is the Braves -- and has been since 1946. A Division II school, it is in large part backed by the Lumbee tribe and Plays in the Peach Belt Conference.

Edgerton is a 3-year starter and 2-time DII All-American. He was consistent; he hit .352 as a senior and for his career, but flirted with .400 as a sophomore. He has power, with 13 homers his final season. The Atlanta Braves drafted him in the ninth round and was a quick signee. He hit the ground running.

In his 10-game pro career thus far, he has hit .432 for Danville, driving in 14 runs in those 10 starts. He has a total already of 16 hits, including four doubles, a triple and home run. He's drawn six walks with just TWO strikeouts. Not only has he had five multi-hit games, he's had four 3-hit games. He's also scored eight runs. (And, for what it's worth, a 1.154 OPS). UPDATE: He picked up where he left off Monday night (HR, 3 RBIs, etc.)

Several picks have had good starts, but this kids has blown me away. He doesn't turn 21 until August.

Quietly, Codey McElroy is having a great start to his career. He's playing short stop at Danville right now, but at 6'5", you would think he will eventually move somewhere else. He played 1B at Texas during his freshman year before transferring. McElroy has a 0.901 OPS right now as a 19th round pick.

Sean Godfrey as well, who was a 23rd round pick I believe. He has a 1.025 OPS to start his career. All three of these guys probably need to be in Rome right now.

One big game might have skewed their stats for the week. McElroy is one guy in particular who will not be rushed.

Second baseman Gerald Chin of Danville was Appy League Hitter of the Week...

    (.625/.647/1.063, 5 G, 10-for-16, 4 2B, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 5 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 1 SB)
Chin's case was very similar to Schwarber's, albeit without the fanfare that comes with being a fourth overall pick. The 21-year-old second baseman destroyed Johnson City and Greeneville pitchers with three multi-hit games and five extra-base hits over five contests last week. He was promptly promoted to Class A Rome, where he's carried his hot bat to the South Atlantic League. The left-handed hitter is 5-for-9 with a double and three RBIs since joining the R-Braves on Saturday.

And Scarpatta got the nod over Sims for Carolina Pitcher of the Week:
    (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 7 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 1 HBP, 1 BB, 7 K)
There was no doubt that this was going to a Lynchburg pitcher after the Hillcats turned in back-to-back no-hitters Thursday and Friday against Wilmington. Scarpetta's role in Friday's gem comes with quite the back story, too. The 25-year-old right-hander missed the entire 2012 season due to Tommy John surgery and was then released by the Brewers last offseason. He only latched onto a spot the Braves system after pitching in an independent baseball in Pennsylvania, and in his third start with Lynchburg, he tossed seven innings of a no-hitter. "It's been a long road, it's been a journey," Scarpetta told MiLB.com. "And it's very gratifying." The right-hander has allowed four earned runs and struck out 15 over 19 innings in his first three starts for Lynchburg.

Found out my wife grew up with Godfrey's mom and stepfather, so now have a more personal interest in how he does. He is off to a great start.

I don't know if that tandem will be a 1-2 combo in the Big Leagues but they are dynamite this year.
