MINORS THREAD 7/17: Gattis begins rehab

Evan Gattis (back) played the first game of his rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett pain-free on Thursday night. However, he is still in the process of improving his timing after an absence lasting nearly three weeks. Gattis finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts as he struggled to catch up with a few fastballs clocked at 94 mph on the radar gun at Coolray Field."It'll take time," Gattis said. "I think hits will be there and everything like that will come back. I'm really just happy to get through this one healthy. First time seeing live pitching, first time really trying to gear up for a fastball. In [batting practice], you just can't replicate it at game speed. So, it was really good."
Gattis has been sidelined since June 27 with a bulging thoracic disk and does not know whether he will serve as the designated hitter or catcher in his next game. Neither crouching behind the plate nor throwing bother his back.
"Swinging was the big test," Gattis said.
He grounded out in his first two at-bats, hitting into a double play in the first before bouncing a chopper to third in his second trip to the plate. He struck out in his final two appearances, but overall, he was encouraged.
"Other than striking out a couple of times, it went well," Gattis said. "Glad to get through this day, see some pitches and I feel good. I feel healthy, so hopefully, I get to catch in the next couple of days." has joined Gwinnett for a brief rehab.

Belatedly finding out that Yunesky Maya, having such a good year in Gwinnett, was sent down, then released, because his contract was being purchased by a in the Korean Baseball Organization. He had a 2.63 ERA for the G-Braves.

Break up the R-Braves! Two wins in a row!

This Godfrey kid has been hitting since he signed and it's nice to see that they are starting him out in CF. There are a lot of guys out there who don't have enough power for the corner OF positions and lack the speed/range to play CF. Hopefully Godfrey can stick in CF. It's way early and as a four-year college guy he's probably faced competition equal to what he's facing now, but there's no denying this kid is smoking it right now.

Godfrey has been a very pleasant surprise. He's on a Kyle Wren path. Both drafted as seniors (though Wren had a remaining year of eligibility due a to red-shirt season). Both promoted quickly to Rome. If he follows that path, Godfrey could be in AA next season.

The success of La Stella (another guy drafted at age 22) has made me realize that guys who are old for their levels can still be genuine prospects if continue producing strong results as they get promoted.

Going to see Godfrey in August in Charleston when Rome comes in for their last trip of the season. I stated in an earlier thread that my wife grew up with his Mom, have since found out it was his dad and aunt. In any event, we are hoping to get a chance to visit with him while Rome is in town.
