Sometimes when you drop something and can't find it, the best thing to do is drop something similar in the same way and watch it closely to see where it ends up. It works. That said, I think it is a terrible way to find a crashed plane.

Gerashenko says on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet when it was hit Thursday by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday.

The adviser also told Russian news agency Interfax that all onboard have been killed.

The border area where the plane apparently went down, near the city of Kremenchuk, has been embroiled in the larger dispute between Ukraine and ethnic Russian separatists. Fighting has intensified in recent months in the region. A day before, according to the Ukrainian government, a Russian military plane shot down a Ukrainian fighter jet in Ukrainian airspace.

A Reuters correspondent near the scene reported seeing burning wreckage and bodies strewn across the ground. A Ukrainian Emergency official told the news agency body parts were scattered up to nine miles around the crash site and at least 100 bodies were seen.

My favorite speculation/conspiracy theory is that the intended target was actually Putin since he allegedly was traveling through that same location like 40 minutes after the plane was shot down.

Interweb has some crazy conspiracy theories (like that this was actually the missing plane and it somehow came back?). Google is fascinating over this.

i don't get it but it has been happening. my flight from Beirut to Amman flew over Syria and i seemed to be the only person thinking that was a dumb idea
