    Fitness

All things exercised related go here.

I used to be in pretty decent shape when I was in the army.
Now...not so much. Amazing what someone telling you to get up at dawn and exercise will do for you.

I have a gym membership, but I haven't been able to get into a routine. The only set schedule I have is school. Work is pretty random for the most part. Anyway I am determined to get into better shape. I want to add muscle and weight obviously. I know I can't completely dismiss cardio either. I am in the midst of a three week no alcohol plan as well. Just want to see how much better my body does without it.

What types of things are you guys and gals doing?

I'm training for a half marathon. My goal is to finish in less than 1:40. After that I need to hit the weights because I've gotten too skinny.

That's cool man. I have never been a good distance runner. More of a speed guy I guess. Had a high 4.5 40 yard dash when I was 19. Unofficial of course.

I am probably good for 2 miles right now and I definitely couldn't give 100 percent either.

How are you getting ready for your 13 mile run?

I like Patton Oswalt's theory on gym memberships. It's basically a fat tax.

I've severely let myself go. I've lost a bunch of weight but not by combining diet and exercise, just by diet so some of that is probably muscle too.

Back when I was in shape I was mainly doing crosstraining as my best way to stay in shape. Lots of football related strength training, baseball fielding to work on sprinting. I also did this thing a long time ago that I'm hoping to start again at some point I called one man catch. It was basically what I did way back when I played baseball to boost my stamina while long tossing. Basically you throw the ball then chase it and throw it back the other way.

I was never someone who was into the gym. I never enjoyed just lifting for the sake of lifting like most people I played sports with. But I love playing sports. I played a 4 hour football game until everyoner was puking regularly and I still wanted more. We once got a hold of an old pitching machine and played a 5 hour game of 6 aside baseball.

Well I ran 1.25 miles outside about an hour ago. Wasn't trying that hard. Clocked in at 10:27. Wasn't flat the whole time. Downhill and a little uphill. More so on the former.

Hmm I want to try that one man toss thing. Just add a little bit of loft when you throw the ball?

Well you can try it that way for sprinting but that wasn't what I did. Mine was throwing it as far as possible than chasing it.

Lost about 30 lbs just adjusting my diet. Cut way back on just casual boozing at the house (2 under 2 will do that)... Subbed a bowl of cereal instead of a full meal once a day. No teas, or sugar drinks...

Implemented push up routine two months ago as well. Feeling good and it's been super easy.

Yeah push-ups and pull-ups can go a long ways.

I used to have this killer push-up workout I would do and my Soldiers would hate it.

It was a backwards pyramid starting at 20. Only going down to 1. Not like a regular pyramid where you go down then back up or vice versa. Different types for each number. You should try that if you want a change.

No. I used to be able to throw it a good distance. I was one of the few kids under 12 who could hit home from Centerfield in my town. At my peak I could probably throw it about 300 feet. Of course that wasn't all the time. One place I played what I used to do was throw it to the back stop which had a droop and a hole so anything thrown into the middle of it would eventually fall through. I'd run after it and try. Stopped when I busted my ankle running over the mound/

I wish I could take credit for thinking of it. I read about someone doing it. I want to say it was Billy Wagner when he was learning to throw left handed?

I love running...get in about 25 miles a week, give or take. I'll mix in some cycling, but I feel like I get a better cardio workout when I run.

Other than that, just some push ups, pull ups, dips...should probably hit a gym...could stand to gain 10-15 lbs.

That's what I am wanting to do. Gain about 10-15 lbs and just be in better shape overall. 25 miles a week is a good target. I will try to focus on just getting out there a few times a week to begin with.

Its .75 around our block (I live in a sub community that is just one complete block around) and walk/jog/run usually between 5 to 8 times a day when insects permit (I can deal with weather but we have the black blood eating gnats and when they bite me, bad things happen).

My goal is to lose 40 pounds from my 6' 1" 250 lb frame but at my age it is tough.

I do not eat bad, I don't eat fried foods and I am heavy into green juices that I make my own, usually cucumber, kale, celery, onion and either raspberries, blue berries or grapes all plentiful to pick here. My garden is producing huge cucumbers at the moment along with squash and my collards are probably readied to be picked.

It is really tough to eat healthy and maintain a positive integer in your bank account.

Just a moderate exercise and eating a healthy diet can make a ton of difference though.

I buy a lot of fresh vegetables at a local produce store down the street from me. Big bundle of asparagus is $3.50, Brussels sprouts $2.50, avocados $1 each, peppers, potatoes, onions, etc. I try and get to the gym 3-4 times a week and do the typical things: chest, back, legs, shoulders and 20-25 minutes of cardio at the end. Squats are the worst but are unfortunately necessary so I make myself do them weekly. Legs in general suck. The other parts I enjoy a lot.

I've found the best way to control my weight is to not eat late at night. I eat dinner between 6 and 7 and don't eat any more after. I've also pretty much completely cut out snacking at work unless it's a banana or an apple. I don't really drink anything during the week except coffee and water. The weekend is a different story though.

I always hate that awkward minute or so when you're in between sets at the gym. Especially in the free weight section. Just kind of stand there like an idiot.
    thank you weso1!
