719 Minors Report: Beachy Goes Five Strong

Brandon Beachy had an outing we were all waiting for Friday; five innings, five hits, one run, three strikeouts. He threw 70 pitches and did not give up a run until the fifth against the Pirates' Triple-A club.

One surprise in Gwinnett's lineup is the coming of age of Phil Gosselin. The second baseman's average with the G-Braves is higher than it was at any previous professional level. The former Virginia Cavalier is a savvy baseball player who figures to have a future if he can maintain his offense.
    --------
Critics of Christian Bethacourt's lack of power may have to find a new argument. The up-and-coming Braves catcher hit two homers tonight for Mississippi, giving him a solid nine for the year in the M-Braves' tough, tight game with Jackson.

Bethancourt this week was the only Southern League all-star to repeat his 2012 honor in 2013. My goodness, what could he bring in a trade?
    --------
Earning his first professional win for Danville today was all-name team member Dakota Dill. He followed a shaky outing from still-healing Jean-Claude Gil with two hitless innings of relief. Dill was a 2013 draft pick (26th round, the latest pitcher to sign) out of Sullivan Ross State. And he seems to be settling in; he has not allowed a run over his last three outings (4.1 innings).

Wren with a good game today. That kid has really mashed the ball since being drafted. I wonder if he will make it to AA by the middle of next year because I see him ending in Lynchburg this year.

Anyone know anything about Micahel Swanner?

Guy did not pitch all that much in Pepperdine. Taken in the 16th round and has a fastball in the mid to low90's with some fade according to scouting reports.

He has done well so far in Danville. Maybe a quick riser.

IF Bethancourt finishes the season strong you can bet your ass he is going to be on everyones top 100 list. Maybe even top 50 with the way he can catch.

Lien's season is really coming together. I didn't realize just how toolsy he was. Still raw on those bb/k ratio but maybe that will improve as he progresses.

Some good nights from some bigger names . Lipka having a fine bounce back year. He was so raw when drafted it could be a long road in the minors but the athleticism is there.

Caratini with a nice night as well.

Beachy could be BIG for us down the stretch

My issue with Lipka is he's still not doing that great. Maybe he's the type of guy who can just lide into the majors with the same stats as the minors but those guys are few and far between.

Glad Betancourt is showing some pop but still many concerns with him. Salcedo on the other hand is shaking out like he may be a decent major league player. His walk rate is good, K rate is a concern, but if he had that under control he could be a potential All-Star.

La Stella just needs to stay healthy. Heading into the final 2 years of Uggla's contract, I wonder what the selling cost for him will be. I tihnk that LaStella starting adn Pastornicky filling in when Tommy is hurt or needs a rest could result ina net positive from 2B. And I like Uggla a lot but if we can save a few million trading him away that could keep our pen strong or let us keep Medlen around another year or Mac around or something I would do that.
