MINORS FINAL 8/18: Breaking down Oz; get mellow for Bello

***amazing! Chop Country saved what I wrote ON ANOTHER COMPUTER!***

It's about time we broke down the amazing season of Oz (nee Ozhaino Albies).

For those late to the party, he 17 (gah!), is a switch-hitting shortstop from Curacao, and is a strapping 5-9, 150 but growing.

His combined (GCL/Danville) line for 2014 reads like this:

    45 G, 158 AB, 34 R, 61 H, 7 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 17 RBIs, .386 Avg., .462 OBP, 17 K, 21 BB, 18/23 SBs.

Of those 45 games, he went hitless in nine of them, but four of those he had two or fewer ABs. He's had 19 multi-hit games, including six three-hit games. He's never hit for more than seven games in a row, but never went three games in a row without a hit.

He's batting .415 against lefties, .376 against righties.

    Again, he's only 17 (18 in January)

More on Caicedo's amazing start (and blown save) frm MiLB.com:

After three seasons in the Dominican Summer and Gulf Coast leagues, Oriel Caicedo wasn't nervous in his Appalachian League debut. At least, he didn't show it. The Braves prospect appeared to keep his composure for seven scoreless innings on Sunday afternoon before Rookie-level Danville dropped a 4-3 decision to visiting Pulaski.

"He did a really good job of mixing off-speed at the right time [against] a good hitting team," said Danville pitching coach Dan Meyer. "He did good job using his fastball almost as more than one pitch. He changed velocity, added and subtracted, used his two-seam and four-seam, almost as if it was four pitches."

The only time Meyer thought he saw some nerves from the 20-year-old left-hander was in the opening inning. Caicedo allowed a leadoff single to Gianfranco Wawoe, then fielded a comebacker and started a double play. He walked Estarlyn Morales and balked him to second but got out of trouble with another ground ball.

"He threw strikes, got early outs. He did a phenomenal job," Meyer said. "He far exceeded my expectations as a pitching coach."

The Panama native retired 17 straight batters until Morales singled with one out in the seventh. A double play later, Caicedo's day was over.

"He was outstanding. I think he had earned the right to hand it over to the bullpen at that point," Meyer said. "He goes home and now knows that he can compete at this level, he can compete and go deep into games. For him, this can help him settle in nicely for the rest of the season."

Caicedo, who struck out four, spent 2011 in the Rookie-level DSL before undergoing knee surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2012 season. He pitched in the GCL last year and returned there this summer before joining Danville earlier this week.

We should just try and sign every kid out of Curaçao. That place turns out athletic middle of the diamond ball players.

We should have exclusive rights for curacaoan players since we and Andruw helped put them on the map.

Albies is easily the starting SS in Rome next season. Curious to see how he does. I'll put my own prospect ranking together in September in a bit of a modified format, but Albies will be at or near the top of any list I make. I'm not for rushing guys, but Albies had done all he was going to do in Orlando. Plus, moving him up has given Didder regular ABs and more innings at SS. Win-win.

Plus, Rome can use any spark of joy and light it can get its hands on.

What impresses me most about Oz is the amount of walks he has drawn while hitting for such a high average. I am hesitant to get excited about rookie ball stats, even Cody Johnson mashed at Danville, but I will be all over his bandwagon If he does well at Rome.

Is that former farmhand Dan Meyer, of Hudson trade fame, coaching at Danville?
