Lynchburg closer Alex Wilson, who saved 16 of 17 for the Hillcats, has reportedly retired in favor of medical school.

Wilson, a 15th-round pick in the 2012 draft out of Wofford University, had eight saves for Rome in 2013, but really came on this year. The 23-year-old, a prototype releiver's body at 6-3, 225, wound up the year 4-3, 2.02, with 16 saves. In July alone, he had six saves and an 0.69 ERA.

A chemistry major, he was named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll in each of his three seasons. He returned to school this past off-season and earned his degree with a nod towards pre-med. It seems that this was the plan all along!

A good friend of mine did something similar. He spent 6 years in the Cubs minor league system as a catcher. Got the AAA level. Hurt his shoulder, and said "I'm done. Time to go to medical school."

He trained in the same residency program as I did. He was 2 years behind me in residency.

Good for him. Never saw him among the Braves' highest ranked prospects, but he pitched well and now he's heading down his career path.
