722 Minor League Report: Reyes Ready To Make Leap; Flores Honored

Victor Reyes may be on the verge of making a quantum leap in the Braves' farm system.

After going 3-for-4 with a double, 3 runs scored and two RBIs Monday afternoon, Reyes has lifted his eye-catcing average to .366 -- just two points off the league lead. He's hit .386 over the last 10 games, pushing him back towards the lofty .400 mark the Venezuelan outfielder posted in June.

Last year, at the age of 17, he was already polished contact hitter, batting .296 but with zero power (three XBH, all doubles, 162 at-bats). This year, a more mature-looking 6-2, 170, Reyes has gone from switch-hitting to lefty exclusively and has enjoyed a mild upturn in his power numbers (.933 OPS versus .733 last year).

Reyes is a corner outfielder -- a valued difference, considering the laundry list of promising center fielders that has emerged this year. With only 13 strikeouts in 82 at-bats, Reyes should not be overmatched even at Rome,

    ---------------------
Pitcher Michael Flores was honored Wednesday with the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week Award for 7/8-7/14, making him the first D-Brave to receive a weekly honor this season.

Flores earned the award with a dominant start July 9th, in which he threw six scoreless innings against the Bristol White Sox to pick up his first win of the season. The lefty allowed just one hit while walking only two batters and striking out seven. Danville used a big third inning, combined with runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth to win 7-3.

Flores has pitched well for Danville this year, posting a 1-1 record with a 3.92 ERA. He has allowed just 12 hits in his 20.2 innings pitched. Flores' calling card is his abilities to miss bats, evident by his 28 strikeouts this season. The 28 k's rank him fourth in the league, just three behind Pulaski's Edwin Diaz. His start Monday night was cut short by rain.
    ---------------
Jason Hursh made his latest start for Rome Monday and added three more hitless innings to his new resume. His totals so far: four starts, 9.2 innings, three hits, no runs, six walks, eight strikeouts. Opponents are batting .097 against him so far.

I'd like to see Reyes and Caratini in the same lineup before Victor gets called up to Rome.

Really got some good athletes in this past draft. It'll be interesting to see what Wren can do as he continues up the chain.

Wren is 3 for 4 today. At this rate he will finish the year in Lynchburg.
