    October 1st:

    1903: The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Boston Pilgrims 7-3 in the first World Series game ever played.

    1921: The White Sox Ray Schalk becomes the first, and only catcher in M.L. history to make a putout at every base.

    1932: At age 18, Joe DiMaggio makes his professional debut for the San Francisco Seals.

    1944: With a 5-2 win over the Yankees, the Browns win their only A.L. pennant in St. Louis.

    1945: Hall of Famer Rod Carew is born in Gatun, Panama Canal Zone.

    1951: The Dodgers beat the Giants 3-1 in the first game of a N.L. playoff series. The game is broadcasted by CBS, the first to be televised coast-to-coast.

    1955: The Indians Herb Score win the A.L. Rookie of the Year with the Cardinals Bill Virdon winning the honor in the N.L.

    1961: Roger Maris hits his 61st home run of the season, breaking Babe Ruth's single season record.

    1961: The Angels lose to the Indians 8-5 in the last game played at Los Angeles' Wrigley Field.

    1967: On the last day of the season, Carl Yastrzemski's four hits helps the Red Sox beat the Twins 5-3 to clinch the A.L. pennant.

    1974: The Mets Tom Seaver becomes the first pitcher in N.L. history to record seven straight seasons of 200 strikeouts.

    1984: Peter Uberroth becomes the sixth commissioner in baseball history.

    1995: The Yankees and Rockies become the first Wild Cards in the new postseason format.

    2004: The Mariners Ichiro Suzuki records his 258th hit of the season, breaking the record set by the Browns George Sisler in 1920.

    2006: The Twins Joe Mauer becomes the first catcher to win the A.L. batting title.

    2007: In a one game playoff for the N.L. Wild Card, the Rockies Matt Holliday scores on a bang-bang play at home to beat the Padres 9-8 in the 13th inning.

    2009: The Cardinals Tony LaRussa manages his 4,770th game, passing John McGraw for second on the all-time list.

    1908: Addie Joss of the Cleveland Naps pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the White Sox.

    1920: The Reds and Pirates play the only triple-header of the 20th century. The Reds win the first two games 13-4 and 7-3 with the Pirates winning the finale 6-0.

    1932: The Yankees beat the Cubs 13-6 to sweep the World Series. It extended the Yankees World Series winning streak to 12 games.

    1936: The Yankees rout the Giants 18-4 in Game 2 of the World Series to even up the series. It's the most lopsided game in the history of the Fall Classic.

    1947: In a 9-8 loss to the Dodgers in Game 3, the Yankees Yogi Berra hits the first pinch-home run in the history of the World Series.

    1952: In Game 3, the Dodgers Carl Erskine strikes out 14 Yankees to set a World Series record.

    1954: The Giants beat the Indians 7-4 to finish a World Series sweep.

    1961: Casey Stengel agrees to be the manager of the expansion New York Mets.

    1963: In the opening game against the Yankees, the Dodgers Sandy Koufax sets a new World Series record with 15 strikeouts.

    1965: Sandy Koufax gets his 26th victory of the season as the Dodgers beat the Braves 2-1, clinching the N.L. pennant.

    1966: Even after a 2-0 win over the White Sox, the Yankees finish with a record of 70-89. They finish in last place for the first time since 1912.

    1968: In the opener, the Cardinals Bob Gibson sets a World Series record by striking out 17 Tigers in a 4-0 win.

    1969: The Seattle Pilots lose their final game 3-1 in front of just 5,473 fans. The team would move to Milwaukee and become the Brewers the next season.

    1974: Hank Aaron homers off the Reds Rawly Eastwick in his final N.L. at bat. It was the 733rd home run of his career and his 3,600th hit.

    1978: Bucky Dent hits a three-run homer to lift the Yankees to a 5-4 win over the Red Sox in a one-game playoff for the A.L. East title.

    1983: Carl Yastrzemski plays in his final game, hitting a single in the Red Sox 3-1 win over the Indians at Fenway.

    1985: The Tigers Darrell Evans becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 40 homers in a season in both leagues. He hit 41 for the Braves in 1973.

    1986: The Mets Dwight Gooden becomes the first pitcher to strike out 200 batters in his first three seasons.

    1991: The A.L. East champion Blue Jays become the first team in sports history to draw four million fans.

    1995: The Mariners Randy Johnson pitches a three-hitter in a 9-1 win over the Angels in a one-game playoff for the A.L. West.

    2010: Before a game against the Phillies, the Braves honor Bobby Cox, who was retiring as manager, a position he held since 1990. He was given a new Lexus and an 11-day Mediterranean cruise.

    1974: Frank Robinson becomes the first black manager in M.L. history, agreeing to a deal with the Indians.

    1976: Hank Aaron records his final M.L. hit as the Brewers DH, getting an infield single in his last at bat off the Tigers Dave Roberts.

    1982: The Brewers defeat the Orioles in Baltimore 10-2 to win the A.L. East. It turns out to be the final game as Orioles manager for the retiring Earl Weaver.

    1990: The Royals George Brett becomes the first player in M.L. history to win the batting title in three different decades.

    1993: The Giants, who won 103 games during the regular season, is eliminated from the postseason with a 12-1 loss to the Dodgers. The Braves defeat the Rockies to win the N.L. West.

    2012: The Tigers Miguel Cabrera becomes the first player since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967 to win the A.L. Triple Crown.

    1992: The Dodgers finish the season with a record of 63-99 and finishing in last place for the first time since 1905.

    1999: The Mets defeat the Reds 5-0 in a one-game playoff for the N.L. Wild Card.

    2001: Barry Bonds hits his 70th home run of the season, tying Mark McGwire's single season record.

    2001: The Padres Rickey Henderson scores his 2,246th career run with a homer, breaking Ty Cobb's M.L. record. He celebrated by sliding into home plate.

The critter made his run just as the Phillies Roy Oswalt delivered a pitch to Skip Schumaker. Umpire Angel Hernandez calls a ball while the Phillies believed a 'no pitch' should have been called.

    1959: In Game 5 of the World Series, a M.L. record crowd of 92,706 fans watch the White Sox defeat Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers 1-0.

    1963: The Dodgers defeat the Yankees 2-1 to finish a World Series sweep.

    1966: At age 20, the Orioles Jim Palmer becomes the youngest in World Series history to pitch a shutout in a 6-0 win over Sandy Koufax and the Dodgers.

    1995: In Game 3 of the ALDS against the Mariners, the Yankees Bernie Williams becomes the first player in M.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate in a postseason game.

    2001: With a 1-0 victory over the Rangers, the Mariners tie the record set by the 1906 Cubs with their 116th win of the season.

    2001: Cal Ripken, Jr. plays in the last of his 3,001 career M.L. games.

    2012: In the eighth inning of the Cardinals 6-3 win over the Braves in the first N.L. Wild Card Game, Atlanta's Andrelton Simmons hits a pop fly well into left field that drops between two defenders. For some reason still not known, moron umpire Sam Holbrook calls the "infield fly rule", even though the ball landed well away from the infield dirt. The Braves would have had the bases loaded with one out of not for Holbrook's idiotic call. Fans at Turner Field showed their disgust by throwing debris on the field, causing a 19-minute delay. It turned out to be the final game for the Braves Chipper Jones.

    1904: The Highlanders Jack Chesbro records his 41st victory of the season in a 3-2 win over the Red Sox. That is considered the modern M.L. record for wins in a season.

    1925: Christy Mathewson, one of the first five inductees into the Hall of Fame, dies of tuberculous at age 45. His death occurs before Game 1 of the World Series between the Pirates and Senators. Commissioner Landis orders both teams to wear black arm bands in memory of Mathewson.

    1935: The Tigers win their first World Series championship, defeating the Cubs 4-3 in Game 6.

    1939: In the Yankees 7-3 win in Game 3 over the Reds, Charlie Keller becomes the first rookie in series history to hit two home runs in the same game.

    1950: Rookie pitcher Whitey Ford leads the Yankees to a 5-2 win over the Phillies, completing a World Series sweep.

    1952: The Yankees defeat the Dodgers 4-2 in Game 7 to win their fourth straight World Series title.

    1969: The Cardinals trade Curt Flood Byron Browne, Tim McCarver, and Joe Hoerner to the Philies for Dick Allen, Jerry Johnson, and Cookie Rojas. Flood refuses to report to the Phillies, resulting in the Cardinals sending Willie Montanez and a minor leaguer to complete the deal.

    1978: The Dodgers beat the Phillies 5-4 to win their second straight N.L. pennant.

    1984: After trailing two games to none, the Padres beat the Cubs 6-3 to win the N.L. pennant. An error by the Cubs Leon Durham is followed by Tony Gwynn's two run double that won the game and series.

    1988: Billy Martin's managerial career ends when the Yankees replace him with Dallas Green. During his 19-year managerial career with the Tigers, Twins, Yankees, A's and Rangers, he had a record of 1,253-1,013.

    1995: Fred McGriff's two home runs lead the Braves to a 10-4 win in Game 4 of the NLDS over the Rockies, helping Atlanta clinch the series.

    1995: After trailing 2-0 in the ALDS against the Yankees, the Mariners win Game 4 11-10, forcing a deciding Game 5.

    2000: The Mets Benny Agbayani 13th inning homer helps the Mets beat the Giants 3-2 and take a 2-1 lead in the NLDS. The game took five hours, 22 minutes to play, making it the longest in LDS history at that time.

    2001: Barry Bonds hits the last of his record 73 home runs of the season.

    2001: Hall of Famer Leo Durocher dies at age 86.

    2005: The White Sox beat the defending champion Red Sox 5-3 to finish a sweep of the ALDS. It's the first time since the 1917 World Series that the White Sox had won a postseason series.

    2006: The Tigers finish an upset in beating the Yankees 8-3 to win the ALDS. It was the first ALCS for Detroit since 1987. Just three years prior, the Tigers had lost 119 games.

    2006: The Mets beat the Dodgers 9-5 to finish a NLDS sweep.

    1927: Considered perhaps the greatest team of all-time, the Yankees finish a World Series sweep by beating the Pirates 4-3.

    1939: The Yankees beat the Reds 7-4 to finish a World Series sweep. They become the first team to win four straight World Series titles.

    1940: The Reds defeat the Tigers 2-1 in Game 7, winning the World Series. Bill McKechnie, who managed the 1925 Senators, becomes the first manager to lead two different teams to World Series titles.

    1956: In leading the Yankees to a 2-0 win in Game 5 over the Dodgers, Don Larsen becomes the only pitcher in World Series history to pitch a perfect game.

    1959: The Dodgers defeat the White Sox 9-3 to win the World Series.

    1961: In a 6-0 win over the Reds in Game 4, Whitey Ford extends his World Series scoreless innings streak to 32, a new series record.

    1949: The lights are turned on during the Yankees 10-8 win over the Dodgers in Game 5, making it the first World Series game to be played at night.

    1958: The Yankees defeat the Braves 6-2 in Game 7 to win the World Series.

    2005: The Astros Chris Burke hits an 18th inning homer in Game 4 to defeat the Braves 7-6 and win the NLDS.

    2010: The Yankees sweep the ALDS over the Twins with a 6-2 win.

    1920: The Indians Bill Wambsgnass converts the first and only unassisted triple play in World Series history. Outfielder Elmer Smith hits the first grand slam in World Series history in the Indians 8-1 win over the Dodgers.

    1923: The Giants Casey Stengel hits an inside the park home run in the top of the ninth to beat the Yankees 5-4 in the first postseason game at Yankee Stadium. It also marked the first World Series game to be broadcasted nationally.

    2002: The Texas Rangers name Buck Showalter manager.

    2004: In Game 5, the Astros defeat the Braves 12-3 to win the NLDS. It was their first postseason series win in franchise history.

    2006: Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle and his flight instructor Tyler Stanger are killed when their plane crashes into a New York City high-rise apartment building.

    2009: The Yankees defeat the Twins 3-1 to finish an ALDS sweep. The game is the final one for the Twins at the Metrodome.

    2010: The Giants defeat the Braves 3-2 in Game 4 to win the NLDS. It's the final game for Bobby Cox, who managed the Braves for 29 years. The fans in Atlanta get a curtain call from Cox. In respect for Cox, the Giants stopped their celebration in the infield and joined the Braves and the fans at Turner Field in a standing ovation for him.

    Thanks, really enjoy refreshing my memory on some of these things that have happened throughout the years. Just can't believe you forgot to leave this game out in Braves historical context, as it is the most dominant starting pitching performance that I have witnessed as a braves fan. Well, that's unfair to say, but right up there with Maddux in Game 2 of the 96 WS & Glavine Game 6 1995.

    1972: In a 3-2 victory in Game 1 over the Reds, the A's Gene Tenance becomes the first player in World Series history to homer in his first two series at bats.

    1973: The Mets defeat the A's 10-7 in 12 innings that takes a then World Series record four hours, 13 minutes to play. Willie Mays' final hit of his career was a RBI single that turned out to be the winning run.
