Minors thread 724: Beachy Allows Only Two Hits In Final(?) Rehab Start

Despite a solid rehab start from Atlanta's Brandon Beachy, the Gwinnett Braves (45-60) could not come up with the timely hits and lost to the Durham Bulls (66-39) 3-1 on Wednesday night in game one of the two game series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The loss dropped the G-Braves to 0-8 this season in Durham and 2-9 overall against the Bulls in 2013.

Beachy (L, 1-4) gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the first. Cole Figueroa led off with a single to center. Next batter, Brandon Guyer hit a groundball to Gwinnett second baseman Tyler Pastornicky who threw the ball away at second trying to start a double play, the miscue moved Figueroa to third and Guyer to second. Leslie Anderson then grounded out to second, scoring Figueroa from third and giving the Bulls a 1-0 lead.

In the third against Beachy, Jason Bourgeois walked, stole second, moved to third on a bunt by Figueroa and scored on a single to center by Guyer to extend the Bulls lead to 2-0.

The G-Braves had numerous chances to score. In the sixth inning they loaded the bases with two outs, but could not push across a run.

The only run for Gwinnett came in the bottom of the eighth as Sean Kazmar led off with a single to center off of Durham reliever Ramon Ramirez and moved to third on a single to right by Todd Cunningham. The Bulls brought in Josh Lueke from the bullpen and he induced a ground out to short off the bat of Pastornicky, allowing Kazmar to score from third, making it 3-1. With Ernesto Mejia up with a chance to tie it in the eighth inning, he was set down on strikes by Lueke.

Beachy gave the G-Braves a quality start in his ninth rehab start of the season, and seventh with Gwinnett. He went 6.0 innings, allowing two hits, two runs, one earned, but took the loss. He finished with four walks and three strikeouts.

Late note: Jesus Jones earned his first victory of the season Thursday, and has now thrown 17.1 innings in the DSL season with only one earned run allowed.

    Beachy should fit right in.

6 IP and only 1 ER given and still gets the loss. Seems like we're passing that offensive awesomeness down the chain.

Why do I keep forgetting we have a pitcher named Jesus Jones. That guy has to make the majors.
