This says it all

We have 2 of the best defenders in ALL of baseball, one with a decent bat and the other that has potential to be the best overall SS in the game if he listen to the new and improve hitting coaches.

When they save that many runs that is unfathomable. I didn't know J-Hey was that good. He is in Andruw territory for outfielders if that is the case.
 
Better chance we trade him than extend him, hope i'm wrong.
 
Even if one doesn't necessarily buy into the specific WAR figures regarding Heyward's defense ("Jason Heyward saved 3,781 runs in right field compared to an average outfielder!"), the broad thrust there is basically undeniable: Heyward contributes significant value through his baserunning and defense, even when his bat is basically average-ish.

And because of Heyward's youth and athleticism, I'm pretty confident that will be true for a while yet. So, for example, if we gave him a seven-year contract, I feel safe in saying that I think he'll be a valuable player for most of the life of that deal.

And not for nothing, but we all know that the moment we let him go is the year Heyward finally breaks out offensively and hits .280/.400/.530.
 
If he wants more than Freddie he can walk, imo. Or we should trade him. He hasn't proven nearly enough to warrant being paid like a top 10 player.

Good player. But defense and base running isn't worth 20 million/yr. We can't afford to pay a lite hitting corner OFer 20 million per for the next 6-7 yrs.

If defense and base running are that important, why not just trade for Brett Gardner and pay him a lot less money.
 
Bc he's homegrown people wanna keep him at all cost. But I'm with Carpe here, no way I pay that much for defense. He has turned down several contract offers bc he is wanting a boat load and obviously we won't give it to him. He's gone whether it's thru trade or FA.
 
Gardner is an instructive comp. Heyward is younger and 2 wins better. He should command Gardner's salary plus the going rate for 2 wins. I leave it to others to fill in the details.

I wish there was a "no thanks" because I hate this post.
First, you opening sentence doesn't make sense. If we paid him what we paid Freddie, he's worth it. He's worth just as much to this team IMO. And that's not necessarily top-10 money.
Second, I wouldn't call him "light hitting." 40 XBH isn't terrible. He's still just 25, which is crazy, and hit 27 homers in 2012. So it's not like he's a singles hitter, and I don't think he's a finished product by any stretch. His HR/FB was ridiculously low, and part of that is definitely because he wasn't making great contact sometimes which is a problem.

Lastly, on the Gardner comment...what's the point in even saying that? Gardner is no where near the game-changer defensively that Heyward is. Heyward is much younger, more athletic, with a way higher upside. Gardner would also prob get 16-18 mil in FA for too many years and end up being a poor contract after half of it. Heyward has a much better chance to be worth $20 mil over the length due to his age and all-around game.
 
I still find it hilarious that Shanks questioned if Heyward loves baseball. I think totally the opposite. I see a player that understands the importance of every aspect of the game and wants to contribute in every way. He's a really smart player, albeit inconsistent so far in his career (which is the standard for players on this team recently, for some reason). I think he clearly understands and loves the game.
 
Everyone here wants to re-sign Heyward and keep him long term. The problem is he wants to get paid based on his talent and potential not his actual offensive production. If we could lock him up for a reasonable deal I would do it in a heartbeat but the second I hear $100M plus for him I cringe.
 
If Heyward plays out the season and hits .300/.400/.500 with his defense what would you offer him? If he is worth 20 million with his current offense that would get him 30 million a year? Probably would get 35 if he did it 2 years in a row before free agency.

Because Brett Gardner is nothing like Jason Heyward. Gardner can't play RF, he would be an asset for CF for us though.

Gardner just signed a 4/52 contract, so I'm guessing baserunning and defense does matter? And he was 31 when he signed it.

Based on what? What evidence is there that this is the case? Or is it just made up?
 
Heyward could potentially play himself into only the Yankees' price range next year, which is why we need to try our best to extend him right now. If we just have him Freeman money, I bet he'd sign today.
 
27 home runs isn't some great season. And Jason will never replicate that nunber in a season again.

Most I pay Jason is 15-17 million a season. If he doesn't want that, so be it.
 
I have more than a hunch he'll sign for 15-17 if we offered it now.

That being said, in what world is 27 homers not great? The year he did that was top 30 in baseball.

Considering the guy right next to him makes 15-17 million a season, and Jason puts up way better numbers on both sides of the game...

exactly.

He is our best player on the team and it is not close. He has had a slump (being hit in the face is terrible and it takes awhile to not flinch), which I might add not as terrible as some think, but he did not let it affect his other world defense.

Right now we don't have any players on our team outside of JH to command above 15 mil based on offense and defense and the intangibles.
