Braves Trade Heyward, Walden to Cardinals for Miller and Tyrell Jenkins

Have we ever made this many transactions before the winter meetings or gm meetings?

The GM meetings were last week.

Just so happens to coincide with the point that the brass realized this was the best offer they were getting for Heyward without a window to extend him (not to mention one that wouldn't have concluded with Jason signing an 8 year deal).

For those that have ignored the Cardinals' side of things, Mozeliak has said ALL DAY that they looked at the deal as a short-term fix.

They wouldn't give Pujols $240 million, if you think they've suddenly become an organization that values Heyward's defense almost as much as Pujols' offense and are willing to drop $180+ million to keep him, there's not much anyone can help you with.

You know what really sent me over the edge today that triggered some of my more bitter responses in the thread? Some numb nut on my Facebook page saying it was the right move to trade Heyward because it would allow Jordan Schafer, a true leadoff hitter, to play every day.

CJ Nitkowski said he thinks he'll get 22-25 mil a year.

An elite 26 year old defensive right fielder, players that age will make bank with the new TV deals.

I'd be surprised if he got less than 20 mil a year.

And "elite 26 year old defensive right fielders" weren't going to help the Braves' get much better unless their offense improved.

It is when you use the raw number. An 850 OPS right now is a much higher level offensively then it was 15 years ago. Some people don't seem to understand that and think Heyward sucks offensively because he doesn't have an 800 OPS.

Heyward is good. And if the league average OPS is 650 and your in the low 700's that's quite a bit better than average, no?

"Better than average" players should be paid $20+ million a year??? All of MLB's in deep *hit if that's the case.

You do realize that Heyward has already posted two .800 OPS seasons, including his first year where he was at an .850 OPS. Last year was the only year that wasn't injury shortened where he didn't post an OPS north of .800.

I think Justin is a safer bet than Heyward but Heyward obviously has the bigger long-term upside.

This is the entire point - the Braves aren't in a position where they can gamble $20+ million a year on Heyward eventually turning into Upton with better defense.

If Jason would've hit 25 bombs this year, all the naysayers have an argument.
