Russell isn't a traditional lefty, as he has a nasty platoon split. He's a strong 7th inning man. Shreve may even play himself to that role, he was better than Simmons last year, Sample size issues all around of course, but his insanely good K/BB ratio continued from the minors to the majors so that's nice.

Not too surprising...we don't match up well with them for a major trade

Great news. I didn't understand any of this. Why would we possibly trade Gattis and JUP for any less than the former A Josh Donaldson or Gray. Let's move on. There is plenty of interest in both players.

I've seen Peterson play more than anybody on this board (several times a week all summer) and he's athletic enough to play right field. Alot more so then Gattis.

Thanks. That was the kind of insight I was looking for in my first question. Not just a declaration that he couldn't play anywhere but 1B, based only on opinion.

They're not making phone calls, but they sure are taking them!

    We're just assuming that, though.

We have had three lefties in the past and it worked out great, but Russell of late has been better against righties (reverse splits last year). Further, I would trade Carpenter and/or Varvaro depending on how spring training goes. We could use a few more 40-man roster spots. So I'd move at least one of them soon for someone that doesn't require a spot on the 40-man.

That said, I would wait to trade one of them after we see how spring training shakes out. Then if an injury happens we just slot them in rather than trade both.

PS: I doubt we'd need to trade both as someone always seems to get hurt in spring training.

That is because the telephone was traded away. Hart didn't think he could get an extension done.

I don't much even want Walker. I want hitting.

What I'd really like is Upton, extended.

I thought he'd blame the economics of technology and Heyward for stealing it.

The link above is the Hart interview where the Lester, Upton and Gattis quotes came from. I noted that Hart does point out that they've fielded calls from teams interested in Justin, etc.

Both Gray and Norris are under team control beyond 2017 (2019 and 2020). Would love to have them. Norris is the exact kind of hitter this team needs and Gray is probably my favorite pitcher right now.
