What the Braves got for Gattis is a better move than what the Nats got for Souza.

It's no slam dunk, but I think at least one of the 4 players we got for JUp will be better than your average sandwich pick. That's an admittedly low bar, but I'd be happy to take the other side of the bet against Cameron on this one. Heck, Jace himself was a sandwich pick and he has not been a disappointment whatsoever at the minor-league level.

Right, exactly. There's a higher chance one of the four guys we got works out than there is of that sandwich pick alone working out. Much higher.

Good point. Though value wise, I think the Gattis trade was better. I like Ruiz a lot and could become a decent 3B and Folty is probably a decent candidate at a being a ML set up man.

The problem with the Upton trade was the cream of the crop is an injured pitcher a long ways away from the majors.

I don't know if signing Markakis was a horrifying move, but it was an extremely odd move given everything else that was happening.

My greatest disappointment of the off-season was the return on Justin Upton. I'm in the middle on the Heyward trade and was hoping there was some way they would choose to retain him, but they did get a major league player with a bit of a track record for him. The return on Justin Upton kind of resembles outcasts from the Island of Misfit toys. That sounds harsh, but like gf says, Fried is the centerpiece and the three other guys look like support level players. Maybe my expectations were too high.

I do like the Gattis deal. He may hit 50 HRs in Houston, but Ruiz, Foltyzichnlakwiskjiwicz, and Thurman is a solid return.

I think we should sign Nick. Compared to the rest of the FA class he represents the best option. Plus no draft pick . Let's do it Johns!

I think the Upton trade is a classic example of path dependency. Once we traded Heyward and made the decision to embark upon a re-build, we pretty much had to make that trade, even if we didn't love the return. We weren't going to compete with Upton on the team. We could have held on to him and tried to deal him at the deadline, but there's no way you're getting a better return in July than you are in December.

So we were in a position where past decisions basically locked us in to one realistic path. At that point, the question for us was simply whether the return was better than the prospect of one compensatory draft pick. It was, so we had to make the deal.

Think trading Justin first makes any difference?

Maybe, though I doubt it. There have been scattered reports that say people around the game think we got a huge return for Heyward in Miller, and while I'm pretty sure I don't agree with that, it does indicate that we likely were never going to get the kind of return for Justin that fans dreamed of. It's possible Hart lost some marginal value by holding out as long as he did (though I said at the time that I thought he was right to play hardball with Upton), but I don't think moving earlier would have dramatically changed the quality of the return.

    ouch

Id say the Dodgers made some good moves this offseason...........

The Nats addition of Turner and Ross for Souza and the Indians getting Moss should be in the top 10 and the Gattis addition should be honorable mention.
You ALWAYS bring up the Nats.

Turner isnt that good, trading Clippard hurts Was NOW given Desmond/Span/Fister/JZimm are FA's after this year.

Minus Scherzer, they didnt have a very good offseason at all.

It's at best a similar thing to what Jason is doing, or what some are complaining about him doing.

In fairness, it is much harsher than anything Jason has said to the media.

don't know what the O's said but teams should be worried about signing a player to a "long" contract with a good amount of money when the person needs surgery on a neck right after signing the deal

i wouldn't have done what the Braves did

    A) Getting rid of him bc of his neck issues is a legitimate excuse to get rid of him.
    B) The other reason is bc he's sucked

    I dont know about bad.

But i would have kept Clippard with Wash clearly ALL IN.

Scherzer i guess wasnt bad, but with the rotation they already have, i would have got a bat or just paid Zimmerman.
