Interesting... Wonder what the details are. If Meds is healthy we all know what he's capable of. Per bleacher report. Comments?

I think it makes more sense to tender Beachy. But maybe they are going to keep both.

Maybe it's just me, but I would stay so far away from Medlen I'd need to renew my passport. I'd be slightly more inclined to tender Beachy and stick him in the bullpen when healthy.
NinersSBChamps (12-03-2014)
I agree, Medlen will simply cost too much for someone coming off a second Tommy John. Plus we are rebuilding/retooling and he is a free agent after this season (a season he is unlikely to play much more than half either way, and even then I doubt it is more than a bullpen role).
That said, I agree with you both in that it does make sense to tender Beachy as he is still cheap and not a free agent till 2017. We can probably re-sign him for around 1 million no problem and at most he'd make about 1.4 via arbitration.

I love the idea. I think Medlen is good. I also know 2nd TJ return rates are bad.
arb is 80% of last year or more.
Sign a multi year deal with some reachable incentives. Guarantee him like 8 million over 4 years. Add incentives to pay him if he becomes a valuable player again.

The @Braves do not tender 2015 contracts to RHPs Kris Medlen, Brandon Beachy and Gus Schlosser; they are now free agents.
David O'Brien
@DOBrienAJC
#Braves tendered contracts to LHPs Mike Minor, James Russell and RHP David Carpenter, their only other remaining arb-eligibles

As mentioned earlier today, the #Braves have discussed bringing Medlen back with a deal that might include an option for 2016.

The #Braves might give Russell a shot to spend at least the early weeks of ST stretching out as a starting pitcher

Didn't see the Schlosser non-tender coming, although no great loss I suppose.

A bit surprised about Schlosser. He has some ROOGY potential.
Roster now at 37. We could dabble in the Rule 5. Delino DeShields would not be a back pick.
Braves1976 (12-02-2014)
The more I have thought about your Delino DeShields idea the more I like it. I really believe it would be a great move because I like his potential to be a solid centerfielder with an interesting combination of power and speed by 2017. I figure till he is ready he can at worst be a decent 4th outfielder this coming season and then if not ready by 2016 he can spend the year in AAA and should be ready by 2017 IMO.
PS: I am also a bit surprised about Schlosser for the same reasons.

The #Braves will continue to work on deals w/ both Medlen & Beachy w/ the hope they might prove successful in return from a 2nd TJ surgery.
My comments: I don't see why they'd have any issue re-signing Beachy if they're truly interested. He'll only cost about a million or little more tops and maybe not even that since he is coming off a second TJ. Further, I'd not give Medlen or Beachy much more than that in guaranteed money personally.
PS: I wish them both the best in making it back from a second TJ no matter where they end up. They're both very likable players IMO.

The move with Schlosser is just odd considering he isn't arb eligible and has options left. So we have Gil and Cunniff on the 40-man but no room for Schlosser or Martin.
Braves1976 (12-02-2014)
Agreed, but I knew they needed to make room on the 40-man with it filled up before today's moves. That is esp. true if they still plan to bring back both Medlen and Beachy on Major league deals. I really hope they are considering your Rule V Draft idea too, though I honestly doubt it.
Braves1976 (12-02-2014)
Timing is a bit surprising on Schlosser. They obviously don't think that much of Cody Martin, but I think he's a better prospect than Schlosser.
You guys know this isn't really true, right?
http://www.baseballamerica.com/major...tchers-career/
Jon Roegele’s invaluable list of Tommy John recipients found 46 players who had two or more Tommy John surgeries. Three were position players, which isn’t all that germane to your question. Another 10 were pitchers who have not had a chance to work back from their second surgeries yet, but of the others, 26 made it back to the big leagues while seven did not. That 78.7 percent success rate compares pretty favorably with the percentages of pitchers who make it back from a first Tommy John surgery, especially when you add in the fact that a few of the pitchers who didn’t make it back were fringe big leaguers pre-injury.
...
But the good news for pitchers is that there are plenty of examples of pitchers making it back from a second Tommy John surgery. And generally they are coming back from the second surgery with roughly the same stuff that they had.
...
So for Parker, Medlen, Beachy and the other two-time TJ men working toward becoming two-time TJ survivors, the prognosis doesn’t seem all that different than that of a typical Tommy John surgery recipient. With more and more pitchers undergoing the surgery in high school or early in their college or pro careers, it’s likely we’ll see even more two-time surgery survivors going forward.
