I'm okay with this move as a stop-gap to Peraza, and then after the kid arrives, Alberto could replace CJ at third or backup throughout the infield (he could probably play 1B in a pinch if Freddie needed a day). It all depends on the $$$ and the years committed.

EDIT: He's 5'9" and 225 lbs. He is either all muscle or Juan Francisco part deux.

Is this to replace the veteran buffet-slayer presence we lost when Laird left?

I think he will start at 2B until Peraza comes up.
As the roster is currently comprised that would make sense. I hope that the Braves can acquire somebody better (via either an Upton or a Gattis trade) to start there and relegate Callaspo to a super-utility role, which he is a great fit for.

    He made $4.85MM last year.

Right. And we will have Elmer Reyes in Gwinnett, so if Simmons were to go down for an extended period, we have a likely in-house replacement. If Gosselin sticks as the 25th guy, he can play the occasional inning at SS.

Great fit. Switch-hitter with minimal platoon split. Good contact and on-base skills (this seems to be a really big focus for the new braintrust). Skills declining as he enters his age 32 season, but that is kinda what you get when you're looking for a one year stop-gap.

I am fine with the move depending on the cost and years signed.

That said, Alberto Callaspo is more of a third baseman, though he can play second but lacks range there which is probably why his DRS is -28 at second. I like him a lot at third though because he is above average there, 11 DRS there, good range and DPR too.

didn't he play 3B too? Could he be a platoon partner with CJ? Or a CJ sucks back up plan?

He played 1B/3B/2B in 2014 alone.

Like w/ Toscano, the #Braves still have some things to iron out w/ Callaspo. But they seem to be close w/ both players.
That darn Rule V Draft is holding up every signing, lol. :)

He is a third baseman basically, but he can also play first base and second. He is above average at third, good at first too, and pretty bad at second but okay to use there occasionally.

This move combined with the Cuban kid we signed, then didn't yet sign, will put us one over on our 40-man roster. That means bye bye to one or two players currently on our 40-man roster. My guess is that Constanza is DFA'd among position players, then maybe Jaime among pitchers will be dropped first.

    Semi-graphic.

    Spoiler:
McCarthy described the events of “Weenie Wednesday,” a hot dog giveaway at the stadium. The team was given 50 hot dogs in the clubhouse, and that’s when the naked duo of Callaspo and [Erick] Aybar had some locker room fun:

"Suddenly Callaspo took one of the hot dogs out of its bun and deep-throated it. Then he took the bun and put it around Aybar’s flaccid penis and poured ketchup on it. Jaws dropped–Aybar was a willing participant. Then Callaspo bent over and pretended to eat the Dominican penis hot dog. When he did that, we all screamed "Noooo!"

He has played more third base than anywhere else over his MLB career (right at about twice the innings there than at second). I am hoping this signing means CJ is about to be traded with Justin Upton and that we signed him to play third.

Yes. Charges were later dropped. He and wife are still together. Still troubling.

The court document said Callaspo told officers he argued with his 22-year-old wife and kicked her in the buttocks after she pushed him. Paola sustained minor abrasions and had a foot mark on her pants, officer Christopher Meraz wrote.

Just updated Callaspo story to reflect #Braves likely to use him as their 2B until Peraza is ready. Also could start some at 3B vs. RHPs

    @DOBrienAJC
Callaspo deal with #Braves is only pending him passing physical.

#Braves prefer Gosselin in utility role, but he's also 2B candidate if needed. RT @ADigesu10: @DOBrienAJC What about Phil Gosslin
