Braves selected RHP Daniel Winkler from the Rockies in the Rule 5 draft.
Winkler was the best pitching prospect available in today's draft, with the obvious caveat that he underwent Tommy John surgery in June. The Rockies still should have protected him. The Braves can stash him on the DL and let him rehab in the minors, meaning they won't have to add him to the roster until August or September. He's a nice pickup for Atlanta.

I think I was the only one who lambasted the Doumit trade, not so much because the Braves trade Gilmartin, but because I believed Doumit would rot on the bench. He'd never really been a full-time pinch hitter before and it showed. People were insisting he would catch, too. Good times.

Is that right? Can you get around that by keeping Winkler on the DL all season, then "activating" him to the big league roster for September call-ups?
He's gotta be active for 90 days for it to count; otherwise the 90-day clock rolls over into next year.

That is what the Red Sox did back in the day with Adam Stern. He spent so much time on the DL in 2005 that he had to start 2006 on the active roster for a couple weeks.

well you were right, Doumit was worthless. Wouldn't be surprised if no one offers anything to him and he winds up playing for the same trash filled AAA team as Francoeur and Uggla, the Washed up Prairie Dogs

Dammit. Major League Baseball keeps foiling my schemes. I'll have to retaliate by re-broadcasting and re-transmitting games without their express written consent.

Braves will need to drop two from their 40-man roster to make room for their recent signings and Winkler. Constanza will probably be the first to go among position players, esp. since we're adding two more outfielders. My guess on the other would be a pitcher, likely Jaime IMO.

It also seems a trade could still happen before hand making only one move needed rather than two.

Good question and one that I pondered in a different thread. He can go on the 60-day DL the first day of spring training and that would open a spot on the 40-man roster, but I don't know if or how that affects his Rule V status.

Per DOB: Braves Coppy cited Winkler .103 OA by RHB. At mininum, they think could become righty-vs.-righty specialist (Stanton a Marlin a long time)

The more I read up on Winkler, the more I love this claim. The Braves basically got one of the Rockies' top 10 pitching prospects for free.

Don't think so since the Senate never ratified the treaty.
