The #Braves are expected to DFA Anthony Varvaro to create a roster spot for Alberto Callaspo.

I knew it was time for him to go and that we were trying to trade him. But I didn't expect him to be DFA'd as I figured we'd trade him first. I guess this either means no one was interested enough for our liking or the offers are so small that we can go ahead and DFA him before making the deal.

    I'm surprised he wasn't traded.

He would have been locked in a battle with Hale and a maybe couple others (Thomas, Shreve, Martin) for the last spot in the pen. He is the only one of that group without options.

Yea, I'd have to think some teams would be interested. But I am guessing it is at a very low return price, so Braves probably decided to go ahead and DFA him. Plus if the return player offered required a 40-man roster spot, Braves had to consider if they were worth also dropping another player from their 40-man to make room.

That said, Varvaro still may be traded for a low level prospect after being DFA'd. I just wouldn't expect it to be much if we get anyone at all.

PS: Varvaro being out of options doesn't help his trade value either.

Let me get this straight. We just cut a reliever with a career major league ERA of 3.18, WHIP of 1.245, who last year had an excellent year at 2.63/1.079, and who we still had under our control for 4 more seasons. We cut him for nothing. You are trying to tell me a reliever that good with 4 more years of team control couldn't garner even a bag of gd balls??

nsacpi won't like that DOB includes Cunningham among upcoming DFA candidates along with Varvaro and Constanza. Surprisingly no mention of Jaime who really should go first IMO.

The #Braves make it official. Varvaro has been DFA'd to make room for Callaspo. Varvaro might soon be traded.

#Braves likely will look to deal Anthony Varvaro very soon after designating him for assignment.

Yes. Can be traded after DFA, might already have deal in place RT @The_Twenty_Two: @DOBrienAJC Varvaro you'd think would have value in trade

If he is traded, I'd look someone that doesn't require a 40-man roster spot in return (possibly a low level prospect).

I think they have 10 days to trade him. IMO, they'll be a taker, but it's likely to be a laugher of a deal.

Anthony did well for us a low-leverage reliever and was actually pretty decent against lefties. Meanwhile, Juan Jaime is still roosting on a 40-man roster spot.

Wow this is a stupid move imo. Not the best reliever but he is a good inning eater out of the pen. This is Fredi batting BJ leadoff type stupid. I will try to give them the benefit of the doubt but if our pen sucks and Varvaro is doing well somewhere else I will be ready to crucify the front office.

I understand he will be traded but it better be one hell of a return and not minor league filler.

He's no world beater, but he didn't deserve the scorn he got from a lot of fans. Curious to see if there's a market for him. There will be interest, but I don't know if the interest by any one team will be high enough that they decide to trade something for him.

Seriously? The 12th man on our staff the last two seasons???

I'll be blown away if we get anything at all of value for him. Would love to get additional International Bonus Slots for him - they'd probably be more valuable than likely offers IMO.

Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

I am a big fan of sub 3 era relievers. I just can't see the sense in signing Jim Johnson for 1.7 mill and then trading Varvaro for trash when he makes league minimum. Johnson is in no way better than Varvaro.

    I thought this was funny:

@DCameronFG The next time someone tries to tell you Rafael Soriano is worth real money, remember that his twin just got DFA’d. http://www.fangraphs.com/projections...players=l19354

Varvarro was okay last year, but there's nothing about him that should incite a huge outcry.

I'm sure the Braves were aware he had a sub 3 era the past two years. I'm sure they have good reasons why they didn't really care.

In the grand scheme of things, this is a non-story.

If you are a fan of sub 3 era relievers, you should like Johnson since he has done that 3 out of the last 4 years.
