Jason Heyward Open to Extension w/ Cardinals

    Per MLB Trade Rumors

Outfielder Jason Heyward is open to the possibility of an extension with the Cardinals, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch writes. The Casey Close client adds that he would have no problem discussing an extension even during the season.

“They asked me to be here and I was traded into this situation, and it’s a good situation,” says Heward. “[W]e’ll see what happens. It’s kind of a unique situation because this is my last year before free agency.”

The Cardinals acquired Heyward from Atlanta earlier this offseason, and Heyward says that he was frustrated by the Braves’ lack of initiative on extension talks. “For me, I was never opposed to (staying),” he says. “There wasn’t a lot of time put in on their part, I feel like, getting to know me as a person and getting to know my mindset on it.”

Heyward is right to note that his case is unique. He’s set to hit the free agent market next offseason as a 26-year-old, and his combination of youth, defense, on-base ability and pedigree should make him very valuable once he does, even though his power perhaps hasn’t developed as anticipated. His age, in particular, is a huge asset, since free agents tend to be much older — Heyward could be the rare free agent whose best years are still ahead of him. Last month in a post on Heyward’s extension candidacy, we noted that Heyward could easily receive a deal of at least eight years and possibly $200MM or more.

As Goold notes, the Cardinals should have a reasonable amount of money available to sign Heyward, should they choose to do so, especially in seasons beyond 2015. Adam Wainwright and Matt Carpenter are the only players they have signed beyond 2017, and Carpenter’s is their only veteran contract that’s backloaded.

He was open to it as long as he got what he wanted. Let's see what he signs for before you post something in an attempt to make the Braves look bad.

Easy there skipper. I'm posting worthwhile info about a player who many have assured is NOT going to sign an extension prior to FA. i'm also pointing out the fact that once again the man himself said the Braves weren't interested in even talking to him about it.

I'm sorry that upsets you. It upsets me too

Of course they weren't interested. They didn't think he was worth what some in the organization thought. At this point both sides are playing with words and only telling their side of the story. If Heyward signs for 20 per year then I will be the first to say the Braves effed up. But if he signs a contract in upwards of 25 then everything ramadon has said is right. There is no need to discuss if the difference between value assessment is that high.

In fairness, the clarification from Ramadon said that Heyward's agent expressed a desire to REVISIT the discussion after 2014 because Heyward hoped to have a breakout season offensively. That's why those talks only lasted ten minutes or whatever and ended abruptly. A year+ later, under Hart instead of Wren, after a 2014 that did NOT see Heyward have a breakout season offensively, they did not revisit it.

Again...if Heyward signs for around 20 then the Braves effed up.

Depends on how the contract is balanced out. He makes 7.8 next year. If he signs for 6/120 after that with it looking like 11 in 2016, 14 in 2017, 18 in 2018, 23 in 2019, 26 in 2020, and 28 in 2021? Yeah. I lean toward saying they messed up. You'd basically get him for 5/73.8 (or less than 15/year) and still be able to trade him at 29 years old if need be. In that same span, we'll pay Freeman 5/83.

I also am open to a contract extension with my employer..... so long as they meet my demands.

And what if your true demands are lower than your employer assumes based off a conversation your union rep had over a year ago with the old manager who was fired?
