The move also likely signals Boston's ready to pull the trigger on a deal for Hamels IMO. They're not hearing the kind of offers they want for Victorino or Bradley and say that they plan to start Victorino over Betts as long as he's healthy. If that's the case, they could tuck Bradley away to try to develop his bat since he's the best defensive OF around not named Heyward now that Moncada looms within the next year or so. He'd give them an option in LF or 3B if they wanted to move Hanley or Panda to 1B when Napoli's contract ends after this season.

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

Another negative implication of Moncada going to the Sox instead of the Dodgers . . . Boston had already gone over they're signing limit for this period before getting Moncada, and thus were unable to sign any big names in the next signing period after July 2. The Dodgers are not currently over so them not signing Moncada means they're positioned to go hog wild after July 2 and we'll need to compete with their resources.

    Assuming they don't sign Olivera.

So w/ his MLB salaries, cost could be something like 6 / $90m with a NPV that makes it feel a bit higher than that.

    @Joelsherman1
Can confirm Moncada to #Redsox. Hear he is getting $31.5M

Olivera is not subject to the international bonus pools or the penalty. He'll be a garden variety free agent. I believe the age cut-off is 23 or 24. Andy Ibanez is the only player being talked about who could put a team over, and I think it's unlikely a team would incur the penalty for him.

Brilliant move by the Red Sox. Their farm system is absolutely loaded right now.

Gammons just mentioned on XM that he's hearing that the bidding on Olivera is now "north of $70 million" (and out of our price range).

Hell, if we can't get someone for pennies on the dollar they immediately become out of our price range.

Now hear it was #redsox #brewers #Yankees for Moncada. #Dodgers would have gone to $35M if waited until July 2 to sign

Dang, this is not good news. Sounds like their strategy was to go after Moncada and many other big fish by picking them all off in the same signing period. Otherwise, they would have been open to sign him in the current period. I'm glad the Braves already have at least one big July 2 guy . . . can't wait to see who it is.

You have to wonder though, dak, since the agreement is clearly of the handshake variety ... is it still airtight? All things considered.

The Dodgers suddenly have $100MM more to freely spend.

Yep, definitely a risk and right now it's not even solid enough to be in a published story. It's at least a small nugget of hoped, and probably a bit more than that. The agent will certainly have incentive not to renege on a handshake deal though.

No one said this was the definitely the plan. People on a message board speculated it, though.
Not Hart's fault the Red Sox print money.

It could be we sent out all those scouts to watch him to deke the other teams. Bet John Hart knew all along he was the wrong player at the wrong time.

I know it wasnt its silly to think we could compete with the big boys economically. The Braves simply went into cost cutting mode nothing more.

Would fit with Liberty's MO. In this instance though I think its just an example of how the big markets can completely take advantage of the smaller markets by muscling them out.
