FWIW, I only see Fox reporting him as an "avowed athiest." I scanned Fox, NBC, ABC, CNN this morning. We'll see what the next couple of days brings.
On a Facebook page in his name, Hicks shared a number of anti-religion posts, describing himself as a supporter of 'Atheists for Equality'. A banner about 'anti-theism' is prominent on his page.
It's based off a facebook post, which we all know could be totally fake.

I hate the concept of "hate crimes", but let's face it, the only reason hate crimes legislation even exist is because otherwise good people "cherry pick" when they're going to actually enforce the law and when they're going to just say "boys will be boys" and that sort of BS.
