Again, that's still a good sized gamble, especially given Viz's injury history.

If you can get a truly elite hitting prospect in return then it may make a little sense. Otherwise we're taking an unnecessary gamble. We don't have to trade Kimbrell. He's easily affordable given our current team structure, and we most certainly will need a reliable closer, possibly as soon as next season (and in fantasy world, we'll need Kimbrel this year to make the playoffs).

If a team would be willing to take BJ along with Kimbrel, I'd trade him away for free. That's $28M off the books to lose essentially a reliever (albeit a dominant one)

What exactly are we going to spend the freed up money on anyways? We certainly are not bringing back Heyward or good Upton. And we have pitching out the wazoo, so Price would be redundant (not that I would be upset if we signed him).

Stults with a nice showing. I'd have no issue with him making the last spot... Gimme all the lefties!

You wouldn't trade Kimbrel to free up $27M in cash (plus upgrade CF by default)??

You also have to remember that we're not going to compete the enxt two years. So we have to hope this guy: 1. stays dominant and 2. stays healthy

Kimbrel is one of my favorite players so a great offer for him is likely higher for me than others here. It wouldn't be so much about ranking if we're talking prospects, Jonny Venters wasn't a high ranked prospect but I liked him even when he had a rough year in the minors. I like Jace Peterson and Mallex Smith from the Justin Upton deal, but neither are high ranked prospects like Folty who I'm not high on. Further, I'd probably wait for a team desperate for a closer and that is willing to overpay for Kimbrel. And if I am trading Kimbrel I'd want a someone (likely in a package deal) who should fill a big need at a position that we're the weakest. But besides that it is hard to say without knowing the offers.

We would have the chance to maximize the value of Kimbrel being relief pitchers are highly volatile. CHances are we aren't contending in the next 3 years anyways.

Who are recent closers who were traded? Soria? What did he go for?

Good point about Viz, I don't disagree there but I was more throwing his name as an example of someone that has the potential to be a good closer. Plus I'd prefer to have more than one option as a potential replacement before entertaining offers on Kimbrel. Further, if you see my response to Hawk you'll see that I am in no hurry to trade Kimbrel and that I'd want a big return. Kimbrel is one of my favorites.

Safest bet for longevity is a Johnson jersey—just make sure you leave off the first initial.

Soria brought back two top prospects in right-handers Jake Thompson and Corey Knebel.

Disagree. F. Gonzalez seems safest bet.

Kimbrel has probably pitched his best ball already. I'd move the **** outta him. We have a good track record on bullpen guys so I like our shot of replacing him without a ton of drop off.

It probably wasn't easy adjusting from Folty to Stults.

BTW, barring a trade I thought Cunningham should've improved his chances at making the team today.
