RIP Minnie Minoso

One of the better underrated players of the 1950s and came into the game when the Cuban border was still open. Also played for several seasons in the old Negro Leagues.

I was just a kid (and a wee lad at that) when I saw Minnie very late in his career as a benchwarmer for the Chicago White Sox. He entertained all of us kids and signed autograph after autograph (only a handful of us knew who he was from our baseball card collecting) during the pre-game warmups at the Old Met stadium in Bloomington, Minnesota.

My dad admired him and does today. It hurts my dad to see two of heroes (Banks was the other) die in a short perieod, but they lived well and that is what he told me to remembered.

I know Minoso was a good hitter for that period and had decent numbers and I think he should be in the HOF because he was one of the few that broke the barrier and carried the spirit of baseball across the land. He was gifted ambassador of the game like you said.......dad has a signed autographed baseball by him.

He certainly had one of the best baseball names ever. Never got to watch him play but I always remembered his name.
