Since nothing obvious turned up on multiple MRIs, it seems unlikely that they will find a definitive issue during surgery that gives them confidence that he will be "fixed". I think we'll hear that surgery was a success and they just cleaned a couple things up. If I'm Hart, my baseline position is to non-tender him until or unless the medical staff is comfortable that they've found and addressed the problem.

Another option they have is to tender him, and then if he's healthy but ineffective in the Spring due to poor shoulder strength, they can release him for 30 days termination pay (a little over $1m). If he's got any lingering injury issues though, the MLBPA won't allow him to be released.
Yeah your first paragraph is definitely true, they keep saying there's nothing on the MRI so what do they fix?
Mike's shoulder hurts, so they have to do something.

That 2nd paragraph would be a slippery slope. If he says he's hurt, he's hurt, right?

Well, if Minor tried to game the system by saying he was injured when he wasn't, the Braves should have recourse to take him to arbitration in order to avoid paying the full contract. Both parties know that they can't get away with lying, so no realistic way it would come to this.

It's still a dangerous play though since he could get hurt. The Rockies basically did this with Jhoulys Chacin this Spring and he too had a history of shoulder injuries.

Surgery to repair his labrum. Out for the year. Considering how hard it is to come back from a labrum tear, it wouldn't surprise me if he's never an effective major leaguer again.

Doc did exploratory surgery, found labrum damage, repaired it. At least #Braves Minor knows what was causing pain. MRIs didn't show tear.

Our attrition rate with pitchers is incredible. Incredibly sad, but still incredible.

We had incredible luck with Glavine and Maddux.

And Harang. How could I forget about him. He was huge.

And Smoltz for that matter, for all the times he got hurt he pretty much still came back dominant. Call that luck or whatever, but it doesn't happen to us anymore.

The funny thing about luck is its unpredictable. Cant assume it will be good or bad in any particular season.

Bowman has an article up with some promising news on Minor, all things considered. If he can really start throwing in September, we should be able to get a decent read on his health and effectiveness before the non-tender deadline. I was expecting him to be shut down into the Winter.

Minor was encouraged that the repairs were made without having to undergo a significantly intrusive procedure. He will undergo four to six months of rehab and begin a throwing program as early as September.
    . . .
Minor should have time to make all of the necessary preparations to get back on the mound at some point in October or November. This would give the Braves time to evaluate his status and determine whether they want to keep him in their organization.

Labrum was frayed with a slight tear. This is about as good a scenario as it could have been. Explains the pain and nothing showing up on the MRI. Still shoulder surgery and a long rehab but not a full tear so that's encouraging.

Assuming he's throwing in the fall and progressing I'd tender. 5 mill is a reasonable price to pay for one last stand on a guy who was good.
