But if Alvarez needs TJ and Fernandez struggles coming back then I don't think they stand much a chance. Their pitching doesn't have much depth at all.
I don't think these starts mean much of anything. I'm more basing it on how the teams are constructed. I don't see the Marlins being all that great, but a lot of media people apparently thought so.

Well like I said, that would be a definite minority opinion. Realize I didn't say wrong opinion.

No, I got you. I know a lot of people jumped on their bandwagon, and I'm not totally sure why.

It wasn't just media member. The advanced stats community pegged them a lot higher than the Braves.

And it definitely helps when you have a potential 20 WAR outfield.

To go along with a 5 WAR infield?

Relative to the Braves... Yeah. I think that their outfield would have been more than enough to supplant them.

But that all goes to poop if Alvarez is out and Fernandez struggles post TJ.

We will see. I just don't really see it. And like you said, they lack pitching depth big time. Everyone in their rotation better be at their best all year.

All that money the Dodgers spent, and David Huff is starting for them tonight.

You say this as Eric Stults prepares to take the mound for the Braves tonight.

Eh, I like the guys at the top of our rotation better than their guys, especially with Fernandez out. Alvarez would have been hard-pressed to repeat last year's numbers even without injury. Same with Koehler. And I'd rather Cody Martin be starting than Stults. I like our pitching more than theirs.

    You would be correct.

Point still stands since Stults goes tomorrow.

    xFIP last year:

    Stults: 4.17
    Koehler: 4.15

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Okay. You take the side of the 36 year old with the career 4.4 xFIP.

    This is kinda nonsense.

    Rough estimate:

    Salty 1.5 WAR
    Morse 1.5 WAR
    Gordon 2.0 WAR
    Hechavarria 0.5 WAR
    Prado 2.5 WAR
    Yelich 4 WAR
    Ozuna 3 WAR
    Stanton 5.5 WAR

We don't have that kind of position player talent outside of Freeman/Simmons. The remaining guys in the lineup are probably 1.5 tops.

There is some merit to the Marlins rotation being bad. If they lose Alvarez they literally don't have anyone that can step in and fill that void.

Yeah, was responding to someone earlier talking about the lineups. The reason I didn't think the Marlins would compete for the division was their rotation.

The Dee Gordon trade remains perplexing. They could really use Andrew Heaney.

Agree. I don't understand why they did it.
