St. Louis is amazing, going to a franchise record 20-6 despite the loss of ace Adam Wainwright. But while Shelby Miller recently threw a two-hit shutout, Jason Heyward (.224, .613 OPS) is noticeably struggling. It seemed to some as an overpay at the time, and one scout says, "They will rue the day they made that trade." That may be an exaggeration even though the other player who came to St. Louis in that deal, Jordan Walden, is on the DL. That is especially true if the Cardinals find themselves in the World Series again.

I thought the same thing at the day of trade and only feel more strongly about it today. It was the best trade made all offseason.

My favorite trade was the ManBan trade. But I pretty much liked them all.

The Man-Ban trade was probably my favorite initially too, though I cannot say I liked them all. But right now I'd argue that the trade of Justin Upton and Aaron Northcraft going to the Padres for Max Fried, Jace Peterson, Dustin Peterson, Mallex Smith, and international bonus compensation is mostly likely to end up being our best move. Also, we supposedly signed 8 players with the international bonus money.

Like I said at the time people complain about the Drew/Wainwright trade but thats exactly what we did and they complain about being on the right side of the trade this time. Miller might not be Wainwright exactly but Heyward also isnt putting up the MVP stats JD Drew did for us.

Varvaro has cleared waivers and been outrighted to AAA by the Cubs.

Not sure i'd go that far.

But also not sure if Martinez, first year as a SP is on an innings limit.

Figure they make a trade for someone though by the deadline.

Blown save for Kimbrel. He's allowed eight runs in 12 1/3 IP this year after allowing 13 runs in 61 2/3 IP last year.

He had been 9/9 in saves chances with the Padres before that and had the longest save streak in the Majors at 35 I think. Kemp falling down on the ball down the line didn't help matters tonight.

Not saying Kimbrel will continue to be this bad but we sold high at the right time for once.

His rate stats look the same and his velocity is basically the same, but they need this guy to be the best in the world to justify that trade.

Completely agree. Plus I think he usually starts a little slow each year. I would think we have already seen the best Kimbrel there ever will be.

Bottom line is that the Braves took advantage of a new GM who was given a mandate from ownership to win. The haul of players the Braves got for Justin and Kimbrel (while dumping Melvin) accelerated the rebuild by at least a year...maybe more.

His K% has dropped. It's still amazing but not as good as it has been. His BB% is as high as last years so far but has slipped quite a bit from his other worldy years of 2012 and 2013. The real hit is his HR/9. It's 1.42 this year which is 3.5 times as high as his career average. Of course his BABIP is really high too which I would expect to come down. He's just been very hittable this year so far.

This is just an adjustment period for a new team. He'll settle in and have a fantastic second half and continue being the best closer in baseball.

But aside from the high BABIP its not anything that's alarming, especially in a small sample size.

The fact that his stuff is the same is a good indicator that he should settle in to be his dominant self soon.

Heyward is quickly approaching Markakis in terms of offensive production... shouldn't be much longer before he surpasses him

Good thing we got our best pitcher for one year of Heyward.

Wow, he is batting 8th for the Cards. If it were LaRussa, he would be batting 9th if that is the case.

Wandy Rodriguez strikes out Logan Forsythe on 3-2 curveball, giving Rodriguez Rangers record 32 consecutive batters retired. Ken Hill had 31

Congrats to Wandy on breaking the above Rangers record today, great game. He had a perfect game entering the 6th.
