I think we need to pump the brakes on the revisionism a tad. Did some people question the return we got? Sure. That's natural, and time will tell that story. I think the major beef (speaking for myself, and probably many others) was if it was a missed opportunity not to extent him when we might have had a chance to do so.
The Atlanta Braves signed Nick Markakis for 4/45 - Never forget 12/3/2014

I wish the Braves didn't give Markakis #22... just seemed like a middle finger to Heyward
I disagree. Defensive WAR works on a historical level just as it does currently. Players like Ozzie Smith and Brooks Robinson were put into the HOF based on their defense. Their defensive WAR numbers back up what people saw at that time. That they were revolutionary defenders and deserved to be enshrined. The numbers backed it up then and they most certainly work now.
Chris Archer is the best pitcher in the American League.
I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case, but I also don't see any reason to assume it is either. The only person connected to the Braves that has ever uttered anything negative concerning Heyward is DOB, and I don't think that carries any weight at all. It seems that the split was rather amicable.
But I could be wrong. There might be mutual resentment that no long term extension was worked out. I just don't think anybody really knows what exactly that situation is.
