    1925: In the Senators 6-2 win over the Tigers, the teams combine to tie a M.L. record by turning nine double plays.

    1941: Hall of Fame manager Bobby Cox is born in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

    1943: The White Sox defeat the Senators 1-0 in a game that takes just 89 minutes to play, the quickest in A.L. history.

    1963: The Reds Jim Maloney ties a M.L. record by striking out eight straight hitters in a 2-0 win over the Braves.

    1992: Angels manager Buck Rodgers and eleven others are injured when the team bus goes out of control off the New Jersey Turnpike and crashes into a tree. Rogers is seriously injured and missed almost 90 games.

    2000: For the first time in M.L. history, six grand slams are hit on the same day. The Angels Garrett Anderson, the Giants J.T Snow, the Phillies Brian Hunter, the A's Jason Giambi, and the Dodgers Adrian Beltre and Shawn Green hit the slams.

    2013: In a 12-0 win over the Mariners, 21-year old Angels outfielder Mike Trout becomes the youngest player in A.L. history to hit for the cycle.

    1902: Hall of Famer Al Simmons is born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

    1922: The Yankees begin construction on their new ballpark in the Bronx.

    1942: Ted Williams is sworn into the U.S. Navy. He will remain with the Red Sox until getting called into duty.

    1962: In a 2-1, 12 inning, win over the Angels, Roger Maris is intentionally walked four times, tying a M.L. record.

    1975: Hall of Famer Lefty Grove dies at age 75.

    1977: The Red Sox hit six home runs with the Brewers hitting five in Boston's 14-10 win. The 11 combined homers tied a M.L. record.

    1981: The Twins replace manager Johnny Goryl with Billy Gardner.

    1983: In the Blue Jays 5-0 win over the Orioles, Cliff Johnson ties a M.L. record with his 18th career pinch-home run.

    1985: In the Reds 7-4 loss to the Cubs, Pete Rose scores his 2,108th career run, setting a new N.L. record.

    1990: During the Cubs 2-1 win in 16 innings over the Reds, Andre Dawson sets a new M.L. record with five intentional walks.

    1992: Felipe Alou replaces Tom Runnells as manager of the Expos.

    1998: The Marlins trade Mike Piazza to the Mets for Preston Wilson, Geoff Goetz, and Ed Yarnell. The Marlins had just acquired Piazza in a trade with the Dodgers the prior week.

    1999: The Yankees Roger Clemens wins his 18th straight game, setting a new A.L. record.

    2002: The A's trade Jeremy Giambi to the Phillies for John Mabry.

    2003: Arturo Moreno buys the Angels from Walt Disney for $184 million.

    1890: In a 17-10 Giants win over the Pittsburgh Alleghneys, the two teams set a N.L. record with 17 stolen bases.

    1935: The first ever scheduled night game in Cincinnati between the Phillies and Reds is rained out.

    1970: The Giants fire manager Clyde King and replace him with Charlie Fox.

    1984: With a 4-2 victory over the Angels, the Tigers tie an A.L. record with their 16th straight road win.

    1991: The Phillies Tommy Greene pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Expos.

    1991: Andre Dawson joins Bobby Bonds and Willie Mays as the only players in M.L. history to record 300 home runs and 300 stolen bases.

    2000: Rickey Henderson becomes the third player in M.L. history to record 2,00 walks, joining Babe Ruth and Ted Williams.

    2002: The Dodgers Shawn Green hits four home runs against the Brewers.

    1909: Christy Mathewson's 24 game winning streak over the Cardinals ends when St. Louis beats the Giants 3-1. Mathewson's record streak started in May of 1904.

    1935: 25,000 fans at Crosley Field watch the first night game in M.L. history. The hometown Reds defeat the Phillies 2-1.

    1936: In the Yankees 25-2 win over the A's, Tony Lazzeri becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit two grand slams in the same game.

    1964: A M.L. record seven shutouts are recorded. The Twins, White Sox, Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Cardinals, and Pirates all are scoreless on this day.

    1994: In a 4-0 loss to the Phillies, the Cardinals set a M.L. record by stranding 16 runners on base while being shutout.

    1995: In a 5-2 win over the Orioles, the A's Dennis Eckersley records his 300th save.

    1998: In a NCAA Regional game, Florida State's Matt Diaz hits four home runs in a 23-2 win over Oklahoma.

    2000: For their roles in a fight with the fans at Wrigley Field on May 16th, 16 Dodgers players and three coaches are suspended. The players receive a total of 60 games with the coaches getting a combined 24. It was the harshest penalty handed down by MLB.

    2011: The Braves Jo-Jo Reyes ties a M.L. record with his 28th straight start without recording a win.

    1922: After being called out trying to stretch a single into a double, Babe Ruth throws dirt in an umpire's eyes, goes into the stands after a heckler, then stands on the dugout roof calling the crowd "cowards". The tirade causes Ruth to be suspended for one game, fined $200, and stripped of his title as Yankees captain, which he had been for less than a week.

    1923: Ty Cobb scores his 1,741st run, breaking Honus Wagner's record.

    1935: In the Braves 11-7 loss to the Pirates at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field, Babe Ruth his the last three of his 714 career home runs.

    1937: The Tigers Mickey Cochrane gets hit by a fastball from the Yankees Bump Hadley. Cochrane would spend six weeks in the hospital. His playing career ended. He would return to the Tigers solely as the team's manager.

    1951: Willie Mays goes 0-5 in his M.L. debut. He makes two great defensive plays in the outfield to help the Giants beat the Phillies 8-5.

    1953: In a 10-3 win over the Reds, the Braves Max Surkont sets a M.L. record with eight straight strikeouts.

    1981: Carl Yastrzemski joins Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, and Hank Aaron as the only ones in M.L. history to appear in 3,000 games.

    1982: The Cubs Fergie Jenkins records his 3,000th strikeout.

    1983: In a 6-0 loss to the Braves, the Pirates Jim Bibby and and Jim Winn combine to tie a M.L. record with seven straight walks issued. The starter Bibby walked the first four with Winn the last three.

    2002: By striking out the Dodgers Brian Jordan in the second inning, the Diamondbacks Randy Johnson records his 3,509th strikeout, passing Walter Johnson for seventh on the all time list.

    2011: The Yankees Mariano Rivera becomes the first player in M.L. history to appear in 1,000 games for the same team.

    1925: Ty Cobb becomes the first player in M.L. history to collect 1,000 extra base hits.

    1956: Hall of Famer Al Simmons dies at age 54.

    1959: The Pirates Harvey Haddix has a perfect game through 12 innings against the Braves, but in the 13th, an error, sacrifice, walk, and a double by Joe Adcock loses the game 1-0.

    1993: The Indians Carlos Martinez hits a fly ball that bounces off the head of Rangers outfielder Jose Canseco and bounces over the wall for a home run. It proves to be the difference in the Indians 7-6 win.

    1997: In the sixth inning of the Cubs 2-1 win over the Pirates, Chicago's Sammy Sosa hits an inside-the-park home run in the top half with Pittsburgh's Tony Womack doing the same in the bottom half. It's the first time in 20 years two inside-the-park homers were hit in the same inning.

    1974: After pitching a two hit shutout in the first game of a doubleheader against the Padres in a 6-0 win, Ken Brett pinch-hits a triple in the nightcap in an 8-7 victory.

    1993: One home run shy of 400, Dale Murphy retires.

    2006: Curt Schilling records his 200th win in the Red Sox 6-4 win over the Devil Rays.

    1930: Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander makes the final appearance of his career, pitching in relief in the Phillies 5-1 loss to the Braves. He finished his career with 373 wins, three straight seasons (1915-17) of winning 30 games, and a career ERA of 2.56.

    1951: After going hitless in his first 12 at bats, Willie Mays records his first hit, a home run off the Braves Warren Spahn.

    1957: By unanimous vote, the N.L. owners allow the Dodgers and Giants to move to California for the 1958 season.

    1986: In a 6-3 loss to the Rangers, the White Sox Joe Cowley sets a M.L. record by striking out the first seven batters he faces.

    1995: In the White Sox 14-12 win over the Tigers, the two teams combine for a M.L. record 12 home runs and an A.L. record 21 extra base hits.

    1998: In the bottom of the ninth, leading the Giants 8-6, Diamondbacks manager Buck Showalter elects to intentionally walk Barry Bonds. The next batter, Brent Mayne lines out to center, giving the Diamondbacks an 8-7 win.

    2001: The Marlins fire manager John Boles, replacing him on an interim basis with Hall of Famer Tony Perez.

    2003: The Braves Rafael Furcal, Mark DeRosa, and Gary Sheffield all homer in the bottom of the first against the Reds, making them the second team in MLB history ('87 Padres; Marvell Wynn, Tony Gwynn, and John Kruk) to start a game with three straight homers.

    2004: In a 7-5 win over the Devil Rays, the Yankees Mariano Rivera records his 300th save.

    1922: The Supreme Court rules that baseball is a sport and not a business. The ruling exempts M.L. teams from antitrust laws and interstate commerce rules.

    1950: Due to lack of player cooperation, the team psychologist for the St. Louis Browns resigns.

    1962: Buck O'Neill becomes the first black coach in M.L. history, accepting a job with the Cubs.

    1976: Joe Niekro leads the Astros to a 4-1 win over his brother Phil and the Braves. Joe would hit his only home run of his 22-year career off his brother.

    1981: The Mets trade pitcher Jeff Reardon and outfielder Dan Norman to the Expos for Ellis Valentine.

    1989: Mike Schmidt announces his retirement.

    1994: The Braves trade Deion Sanders to the Reds for outfielder Roberto Kelly and minor league pitcher Roger Etheridge, who never appears in a M.L. game.

    2003: The Red Sox trade third baseman Shea Hillenbrand to the Diamondbacks for reliever Byung-Hyun Kim.

    2010: The Giants Buster Posey makes his M.L. debut, going 3-4 with three RBIs in a 12-1 win over the Diamondbacks.

    2010: After hitting a walk-off grand slam to beat the Mariners 9-7, the Angels Kendry Morales jumps onto home plate and breaks his left ankle. The freak injury causes him to miss the rest of the season.

    2010: The Phillies Roy Halladay pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the Marlins.

    1913: The Red Sox Harry Hooper becomes the first player in M.L. history to start both games of a doubleheader with a home run.

    1925: Between games of a doubleheader against the Pirates, second baseman Rogers Hornsby replaces Branch Rickey as Cardinals manager.

    1935: Babe Ruth plays his final M.L. game. He goes hitless for the Braves against the Phillies.

    1943: With games played in Racine, Wisconsin and Rockford, Illinois, The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League begins the first of its 12 seasons of play.

    1970: After being selected by the players, coaches, and managers the past 12 years, All-Star voting returns to the fans.

    1977: The Indians Dennis Eckersley pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Angels.

    1982: Cal Ripken Jr. begins his record streak of 2,632 consecutive games played in the Orioles 6-0 loss against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

    1987: The Reds Eric Davis becomes the first player in N.L. history to hit three game slams in one month.

    1991: The Mets trade second baseman Tim Teufel to the Padres for shortstop Garry Templeton.

    2001: The Expos fire manager Felipe Alou, the winningest manager in club history. Owner Jeffery Loria replaces him with friend Jeff Torborg.

    2006: The Royals hire Dayton Moore as their new General Manger.

    2008: The Red Sox Manny Ramirez hits his 500th home run.
