Report filed from Broadcaster Greg Young:

A bus carrying the Class A Advanced Carolina Mudcats lost control and flipped on its side early Tuesday morning in Columbus County, North Carolina. Seven players and one team trainer were taken to a nearby hospital and later released, according to WECT-6 in Wilmington.

Operated by Abbott Bus Lines, Inc., of Roanoke, Virginia, the bus was taking the Mudcats from Salem, Virginia, where they had just finished a five-game series, to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for a three-game set. It's a trip of about 300 miles. Tuesday evening's game has been postponed.

Kay Worley, Columbus County's Emergency Services Director, told WECT that the bus crashed around 3:45 a.m. with 33 members of the team on board. The bus, which had flipped onto its right side and skidded down Clarendon Chadbourn Road, was pulled upright around 6 a.m.

Mudcats director of broadcasting and media relations Greg Young told WECT that he had dozed off before hearing the driver become frantic and lose control. The passengers exited through the hatch in the bus' roof
."Some of the players held on to their seatmates so they wouldn't be harmed any further," Young explained. "Everyone kind of huddled up and when the bus stopped everybody got up as fast as they could. Everyone checked on each other to see if there were any major injuries.

By noon, the team was back on the road to Myrtle Beach. Tuesday's game has been postponed.

So often there is a remarkable story behind the story. This is from the linked update above:

Pitcher Justin Jackson said he feels as if his best friend, Phillip Byrd, who was killed in a plane crash in Atlanta last Friday, was watching over him and his teammates.

"I just know Phillip was there looking over us. Without a shadow of a doubt, he was there," Jackson said. "I mean, we drive off the side of the road going full speed and slide that far, and we have a couple concussions and a dislocated finger and that's it. I know that God's got us and my little guardian angel Phillip was there for us."
