CJ may always have an elevated BABIP ( not that I think he'll hover north of .400 for his career). If that's the case, he may turn out to be pretty valuable. If he could only improve on his defense, his value would soar.

He should have an elevated BABIP as long as he keeps hitting line drives.

This article basically says what most of the Johnson "haters" have been saying. He's a good average hitter but that's about it.

His value problem lies in 2 areas, first in that he doesn't have much power and he is bad with the glove. The issue with his average and why it will never be like the other guys mentioned in the article is his K rate. Johnson is striking out at a 21% and is at 24% on his career. Cobb, Shoeless Joe, and Hornsby all struck out below 8%. Jeter is below 15% (though barely)

Johnson doesn't have the skill set to most likely. In a 600 PA season he would K about 144 times, take out the 34 walks or so, and 15 homers or so he would be hitting in the .280-.290 range. Which is very good but not exceptional with his other weaknesses.

Johnson has over 1650 PA now of a high BABIP. Maybe he will just always have a high BABIP.

The numbers Zito posted is with Chris having a 350ish BABIP. Which I think is reasonable for him to sustain for a couple of years. But that's why the lack of walks and high k rate is important. It doesnt leave much room for error. Now a 285/325/425 line isn't a horrible hitting line. But it's not great when you see he's a poor base runner and fielder. He's an average player overall which is fine considering what he costs. I just don't see him as a long term solution unless the fielding improves. Which is a possibility.

    .360ish actually

But that's the thing, good but not great hitter, terrible defender. Their guesstimation of about a 1 fWAR I think is pretty much on point.

Key takeaway: It's ok to be a decent, average-ish player. That's got value. People don't have to either suck or be amazing.

Truth, look at your own posting, neither the greatest or the worst, but a key contributor non the less

I've noticed a few people around here calling him BABIP Boy. I feel this is disrespectful toward Chris and would like to propose Lord BABIP as an alternative.

Christopher of House Johnson, Baron of Bloopers. Heir to the Hallowed Third Square, Conqueror of El Juan. Initiator of Contact, Scourge of the Pull-Side Out, styled "Lord BABIP."

His sigil is a rainbow set against an oak tree. The words of his house are "We do not regress."

    He's at least a Viscount.

I also liked BABIPimping, which somebody posted in last night's game-thread.

Edit: That **** above is phenomenal, Julio.

Another very interesting Fangraphs article on the Greatest BABIP Men of Baseball, which somewhat shockingly includes erstwhile Brave Wilson Betemit.
