CJ may always have an elevated BABIP ( not that I think he'll hover north of .400 for his career). If that's the case, he may turn out to be pretty valuable. If he could only improve on his defense, his value would soar.

This article basically says what most of the Johnson "haters" have been saying. He's a good average hitter but that's about it.

The issue with his average and why it will never be like the other guys mentioned in the article is his K rate. Johnson is striking out at a 21% and is at 24% on his career. Cobb, Shoeless Joe, and Hornsby all struck out below 8%. Jeter is below 15% (though barely)

The numbers Zito posted is with Chris having a 350ish BABIP. Which I think is reasonable for him to sustain for a couple of years. But that's why the lack of walks and high k rate is important. It doesnt leave much room for error. Now a 285/325/425 line isn't a horrible hitting line. But it's not great when you see he's a poor base runner and fielder. He's an average player overall which is fine considering what he costs. I just don't see him as a long term solution unless the fielding improves. Which is a possibility.

But that's the thing, good but not great hitter, terrible defender. Their guesstimation of about a 1 fWAR I think is pretty much on point.
