My purpose was not to offer a value judgment but just to offer an explantion. Sometimes, personnel decisions of this nature are made to "reverse" a prior mistake. For those who like hockey, recall this one:

    Somebody's had a bad day.

Since when have a bitched about JS from the early to mid 90s? The guy was solid and did a good job, albeit he had an advantage over most teams with a top tier payroll. He also stepped into a damn good situation, with a team with elite depth of good young players. But he deserves credit for filling in the missing pieces and making us a contender, with the exception of focusing on the back end of the bullpen.

But I think you'd even admit, when we started to no longer have an advantage with finances, that somewhere around 1997 JS made some very questionable moves and became even worse near the turn of the century with baffling moves, a lack of foresight, and an unwillingness to deal with agents.

For instance you bring up the Galarraga cancer situation. That has nothing to do with the gaping hole at first in 2001 and 2002 does it? One of the easiest positions to fill production and we have to reside on finding an elderly Julio Franco in the Mexican League in a last minute attempt to fill the position. An organization like the Atlanta Braves should not be I'm a position like that. And although Julio worked out to a point and I loved the guy to death, championship caliber clubs shouldn't have to reside to things like that and it was a weakness that was band aided and came back to bite us in the playoffs.

JS became a knee jerk decesion maker. We had out first baseman in waiting in Klesko who should have been the heir apparent to the Big Cat. But JS went all out and invested in speed.

And ultimately the Byrd signing and Ortiz move forced JS's hand to trade Millwood. You can blame Maddux and Boras, but it's the fact that Those acquisitions cost the same as Millys potential salary. And Maddux was still better than any acquisition at that point. But JS isn't at fault for not having dialect with Maddux and his agent. There's a common theme during that time frame, and it wasn't just with Boras. JS overplayed his hand and had an ego the size of Texas. And yet through all of that JS wanted to invest long term in a declining Glavine, who was awful and showed signs of decline in the second half of 02. Maddux was the better pitcher, and Millwood would have been the defacto ace.

I'm Millwood's biggest fan, but even I'll admit I wasn't expecting him to be a HOF guy or on the same level as the big 3, but at that particular time he was our Best starting pitcher at that time going forward during that transitional phase.

Every thread's an opportunity to wail for you. So, you have more bad days than me.

Checking into another thread, just from yesterday, there was this little gem:

Dan Kolb, Chris Reitsma, Bob Wickman, Roberto Hernandez, and Ray King are all waiting for their phones to ring.
You need to get out and experience other things in life, apart from this OCD about the Braves. To be fair, you're not alone in this condition - witness forum meltdowns after any unpopular transaction. One last thing before ending this aspect of the discussion from this end. Schuerholz was tired of Klesko riding shotgun with the SWAT teams during the off-season. That's why he was traded.

If true, that isn't helping your case for Schuerholz. That's a stupid reason to trade a guy. If he had a habit of being inside homes that SWAT teams raided I could see the point.

Sounds like a pretty good excuse to trade a consistant .850+ OPS player at a potential position of need for a good player with just one year left on his deal and consistantly couldn't hit a slider? Plus Rhino was the only legit left handed hitter we had during that period of time, as after the trade with SD we became a right handed dominant lineup that could be pitched the same way to get them out (Reggie, Andruw, Javy, BJ,Galarraga).

I'm not making any case for or against, just explaning the reasons. Just sick of a certain someone endlessly ranting about every transaction from the last 15 years. If it gives others reading pleasure, then far be it for me to call it out. "Boo hoo hoo. My team made move that I didn't like!"

With the SWAT team issue, it's pretty standard in just about any sport to have dangerous activites clauses in the contracts. In Formula One, they frown upon skiing during the off-season. Back to the Braves, JS had Ronnie Gant's contract voided because of the dirtbike accident. Everybody should remember that one.

He comes off like an angry old man quite often--though he's apparently not all that old. It's hard to take him serious because of that.

Are you speaking from experience? :)

BTW, this talk about dating girls from the comfort of your parents basement reminds me of my teens (we had a game room in our basement, including a pool table. So sometimes I'd have girls over to watch a movie, play some pool, etc).

Yeah, I'm really 78 years old. You seem to get on my junk quite frequently - always unprovoked, of course. Don't let me stand in your way for thinking you're so much more brilliant, just because you have to first consult with Fangraphs to decide if a player's good or not.
