C O'Dowd Get 80 Games for Manning Up

Braves Minor League catcher Chris O'Dowd, the son of longtime Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd, was suspended for 80 games Wednesday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball said O'Dowd, a 23-year-old backstop with Double-A Mississippi, received an 80-game suspension without pay after testing positive for testosterone metabolites of exogenous origin, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

    The suspension is effective immediately.

O'Dowd was hitting .304 with two homers, 16 RBIs and a .429 on-base percentage in 26 Southern League games this season, his first with the Braves organization. In 234 career Minor League games, the switch-hitter owns a .264 average with nine home runs, 89 RBIs and 44 stolen bases since 2012.

Originally drafted by the Padres in 2012, O'Dowd signed with his father's organization in March 2013 and spent the last two years in the Rockies' system, reaching Double-A Tulsa last summer.

    ------------

Wonder why Daddy Dan didn't mention this during Monday's draft broadcast?

Yeah, Dalyn posted an article after some chatter about Dan O'Dpwd joining the Braves org. It was, er, . . . unappealing.

And, in light of this, probably hypocritical bull****, just like it sounded.

Didn't get the need for that one. At all. Ditto Kubitza and TLS, never having been a big fan of Arodys. None of those are going to make or break us, but . . .

Nepotism is a hell of a drug.

And you never liked Arodys? Dude was filthy when he came up with us. I take him healthy over a one-dimensional player in La Stella any day. Never got the love affair with that guy.

Are you questioning the powerhouse front office's decisions?

They needed catchers and they got Briceno, who actually had put up decent numbers. The trade made sense, because they felt Briceno could be an option behind the plate in the future. I felt like O'Dowd was just minor league depth. It isn't looking good though, because obviously Briceno is struggling. Maybe O'Dowd stole his juice.
    thank you weso1!

My first thought. Reminds me when Orel Hershiser would talk in one sentence how he was singing a hymn to himself on the mound during the World Series and then after his retirement talking about how he used to scuff the ball.

PS--Thought the LaStella trade was fine. He's Mr. Ouch. Seems to find his way to the DL every season with some odd injury (currently his ribs). I wasn't a Kubitza fan, but thought he would have been a decent guy to have around (especially considering my irrational dislike of Chris Johnson). Really no opinion on the Hale deal. The crux of the deal was Hale for Briceno and Briceno is a light year away. May not turn out to be much for us, but I would be surprised if Hale amounts to much going forward.

I'm not claiming to know **** about ****, but I have always been skeptical of him. Power arm, for sure, but I was disappointed in his breaking ball after hearing how great it was in the scouting reports when he came over. The fact that he's been traded 3 times before his 25th birthday could be seen as a glass half-full or half-empty, I guess. I'm probably wrong about him, and I hope I am. He's still young and has plenty of time to get healthy and prove it.

He's been traded twice, and injury is a big part of that. He just needs to stay healthy. I actually liked his stuff the most of "the big 3" (Teheran, Delgado, Viz). He's definitely a reliever, not a starter though.

Yeah, would've been nice to unload Lowe, since he was decent in 2009, and had a rotation of Javy, Hudson, Hanson, Jurrjens, Medlen/Minor in 2010.

3 times, right? To Braves from Yanks for Vazquez, to Cubs from Braves, to Braves from Cubs.

I'm not arguing against his arm. Some guys you like, some you don't. I admit to irrational bias.
