Ask Tommy Hanson. Going from point a to point b with all the effort he uses isn't good long term.

Cheese and chalk. Hanson whipped his arm and used about 65% of the possible rotation of the shoulder. Lots of torque. He was a biomechanical nightmare. It was a matter of time.

Wood is open at release because his stride is six inches right of center. I don't like it because it's not as efficient as it could be, but a lot of pitchers (especially Dominicans) do it, just without the shoulder roll. Mario Soto comes to mind. It won't kill him quickly, and it's got to be hard to pick up the ball. I think he's going to be okay.

And like you said the shoulder roll could be a recurring problem.

You never know (Hey, Joaquin Andujar was open like that, too!). He could have a nice long career, he could need TJ again. I agree with your conclusion, though. Woody doesn't scare me like Hanson did.

Although according to Zito, Hanson had nearly flawless mechanics with tons of leg power... despite the fact he had one of the most violent shoulder whips on the follow through I've ever seen.
