WowLast week, the Confederate flag fluttered at full-staff in front of the South Carolina State House while the American flag and the state's palmetto flag were lowered to half-mast in honor of the nine bible study members shot dead by 21-year-old Dylann Roof at Emanuel AME Church, the oldest black congregation in the South.

"When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross"
EXCLUSIVE - GOP US Sen Tim Scott is joining the chorus of officials calling for the Confederate flag to be removed from the Statehouse today
maybe mississippi can change their racist flag next
lol. I love that Scott and Haley are crumbling under political pressure over this.
I hope someone nails them for not wanting to do this years ago.
Forever Fredi
sure did get quiet here

Oh, it's making plenty of sense.
Something that hasn't been addressed in almost two decades is suddenly of massive importance because it's politically toxic to take any other position. To kind of echo what Heywood said, I'd have much more respect for the process if it wasn't unfurling (no pun) the way that it is.
To be completely honest with you, I think this makes race relations worse in the state (in the short term, at least).
But I'd glad to sense that you think real progress is being made here. Mississippi next right?
Will be quite interesting to see how the legislature responds.

The First Step of 12 steps of Recovery is admitting that there is a problem.
I will take the acknowledgement of a problem as progress.
Another slogan used in 12 step programs is
"Progress not perfection"

This is going to be very interesting.
Local paper is calling up each member of the legislature and pressing them for immediate response on their vote.

I'll just say this: Some upstate politicians are considerably more stubborn than you might imagine.
Grateful that Haley and Scott are doing so. I'll leave the reading of their motives to others.

BREAKING: Governor asks that focus remain on church shooting victims, not on Confederate flag issue.

Hah.
(and I thought we were supposed to be angry at guns, too?)

This started (this time) with Black Lives Matter. An outgrowth from the Trayvon Martin event.
No shots fired, not windows broken , no fires or arrests of participants.
Maybe these people are on to something ?
Strom Thurmonds kid - huh?
I have nothing bad to say about Scott beyond run-of-the-mill political differences, but Haley would wear the Confederate flag as a scarf or put it in a wood chipper if either would guarantee her advancement.
That said, I applaud this move.
Hawk, as for your musing about a referendum, I'd be really curious to see how that would go (purely for academic reasons), and it's interesting to note that the folks who are elected on a statewide ballot have all come out front on this quickly.
