Rosenthal: Bud Black could be a fit for Braves

Rosenthal talks about Black in the last segment of the video linked below. Though he says there's is nothing brewing between Black and the Braves at the moment, he notes that JS traded for Black as a player in his tenure at Kansas City, and that Black worked under Hart in the front office with the Indians. I think the latter connection is more meaningful.

It's funny, I've definitely been one of the ones that has aggressively called for Fredi's head at certain times (like at the end of last season) ... but when pushed to the edge on the issue I'm a little reluctant.

I think he's done an admirable job this season. More or less.

A big fan of Black's though.

Based on what I know of Black, my only concern is his demeanor. Not a very demonstrative / fiery guy. I'm not saying I want Lou Piniella, but Black seems to have a style similar to Fredi's when it comes to confrontation.

Another thing that I'm hoping for in the next coaching staff is better use of defensive shifts. I think we're behind the curve on this with the current staff. Honestly don't know Black's history in this area.

Bud Black is also friends with and goes pretty far back with Chad Macdonald. So maybe he has enough connections here to get strong consideration as I am hoping.

I don't think he's that similar to Fredi, he sure seems to defend his players a lot more. In fact he was out arguing a lot that last series we faced the Padres before his firing. Plus I know for sure he is much better at managing a bullpen because I have paid closer attention to him in that area.

We called this a long time ago. Rosenthal is late to the party. For all your Braves news just comes to Chopcountry.

Black sure was fiery when he got tossed in the series finale between San Diego and Atlanta a few weeks ago.

I have not seen that side of him, but I'll admit that I don't see many Padres games either. If he has a reputation for sticking up for his players, then that makes me feel a lot better. With him being a well-respected pitching coach, I feel pretty good about him managing the pen. Also, his players seem to like him and praise him in public. You certainly don't see that with Fredi.

Every manager instantly becomes the worst in the majors when he signs with the Braves. People were even ****ting on Bobby Cox when we had him. There is no manager who manages how you want him to. None. Bud Black would be playing Gomes just like Fredi has.

I have payed more attention to his usage of the pen as that's a big issue IMO and Fredi is probably the worst I've seen in that area. But I have seen Bud Black defend his players more than Fredi, but I don't watch a lot of Padres games either so how much he does so is a harder question. I don't think he is like a Bobby Cox that way but I am confident based on what I've seen to say he does so more than Fredi and argues a lot of calls faster than Fredi does too (see for example how fast Black argued the Peterson play call below, Fredi would've either took forever getting out there or not even seen it). I don't recall anyone critical of him in that area and as you note his players seem to like him and praise him in public.

For all of those who say that Bud Black hasn't done anything with the Padres you have to realize that Bochy didn't do much there either.

The people ****ting on Bobby Cox are the ones who would **** on anybody. And tell me what does Fredi do that's good? He can't manage a bullpen. He doesn't defend his players. He leaves hurt pitchers in the game when they should be taken out. And he can't manage a clubhouse.

Exactly. Plus we had to bring in players like Gomes to manage the clubhouse but folks want him gone. Gomes deserves more credit than he gets around here, Peterson for one cited him as taking him under his wing early on and look how well Peterson is working out for us. Plus Gomes is still hitting lefties it's just his numbers are bad due to starting too much vs righties. We knew going in he would stink vs righties. We got him for leadership and as someone who historically mashes lefties. Further, I find it silly to say Black or everyone would play Gomes too much vs righties just because Fredi does so.

I read other teams message boards to get their opinion and 9 out 10 think they have the worst manager in the game. I would have fired Fredi for the NLDS Gane 4 fiasco but there is no reason to think a new manager will be any better.

There are plenty of reasons to believe a new manager would be better,

Hey now, I thought what some fans assert on various message boards settled this debate. :)

Fredi's trying to figure out whether this thread is a good thing or not concerning his future with the Braves.
