Is that a wise move? He's a possible trade chip, imo. Although, I could see him being a pretty solid long term reliever.

It's his floor, but I certainly don't think we should give up on him considering the flashes he showed this year. His value in a trade would be tied to him as a potential starter as well.

... and suddenly, the bullpen looks very nasty.

Although, I will say that I loathe bouncing power arms from the rotation to the bullpen and back.

Could bringing him up as a reliever be a clue that Jim Johnson, grilli, or both could be gone pretty soon?

I think folty could be a good closer if he cut down to 2, maybe 3 pitches and just aired it out with the fastball.

So is that 13 pitchers then? Preparation for Coors Field maybe?

Bad move. His best value is as a starter until he proves he can't be one.

Yeah, I'm with the people who want him as a starter. He's capable of throwing the ball 97-98 even after 100 pitches. You don't give up on that kind of stamina as a starter easily. I have no problem with using him as a reliever this year if you want to limit his innings or get him some more experience at the big league level. But long term his best value is as a starter.

I think this could be a move to show scouts that he can get MLB hitters out. He can still be a starter.

It could also be a move because we are about to trade Grilli, Johnson, or Availan. We won't let the team go bad news bears so this may be the stop gap solution.

I don't like the idea of jerking a guy from starter to pen, but they could see it as a chance to get him more MLB experience and then stretch him out next year.

I mean we have a massive need for help in the pen right now and we're close enough to a playoff spot it makes sense. I don't love delaying his development as a SP but he would be far from the 1st pitching prospect to be moved to the pen then back to the rotation the following year. But long term with all of our depth...is it really bad if he becomes a dominant closer for us long term?

If you guaranteed me he'd be a rock solid closer, I'd take that.

    S. Simmons
    Withrow
    Vizcaino (hopefully)

That would be a nice foundation for a solid bullpen going forward

Folty, Withrow, Viz, Winkler, Simmons...........That's a good foundation if you aren't worried about injuries and PEDs....

Also we have all of those college RPs we just drafted.

I hope we don't have to spend big money in the pen moving forward.

I think they killed Medlen's arm doing it.

Winkler is a bit of a dark horse and often forgotten in the prospect horde the Braves have accumulated, but he could easily contend for a spot in the rotation in 2017 if his recovery from TJ goes according to plan.

I'm ok with this move as long as its temporary. Lots of big starting pitchers got their start in the pen.

The long term strategy though is to have Folty in the rotation.

Anyone have any insight as to his service time? I know he got some time in late last year with the Astros but has he been down enough this year to get us another year of team control if he stays up the rest of the year?

Doesn't mean he won't have another chance at it. One need look no further than our old pal, Adam Wainwright. (That's the only comparison b/tw the 2.)

No but you are trying to develop the guy. He should be in AAA developing (and not accumulating service time) until/if he proves he can't be a starter. You've got a number of warm bodies who could have taken that role.
