    Today In Baseball History: August

    August 1st:

    1918: In the 21st inning, the Pirates break the longest scoreless game in M.L. history with two runs to defeat the Braves 2-0. The record would stand alone until tied in 1967 by the Giants and Reds.

    1923: Harry Frazee, the Broadway producer most known for selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees, sells the Red Sox to a syndicate led by J.A. Robert Quinn.

    1941: In a 9-0 Yankees win over the Browns, Lefty Gomez walks 11 batters, setting the record in a shutout.

    1945: Mel Ott becomes the third player in M.L. to hit 500 home runs, joining Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx.

    1962: The Red Sox Bill Monbouquette pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the White Sox.

    1975: Billy Martin replaces Bill Virdon as Yankees manager. It is the first of five times he'd be hired as the Yankees skipper.

    1977: In the Giants 9-2 win over the Expos, Willie McCovey extends his own N.L. record with his 18th career grand slam.

    1978: Pete Rose goes 0-4 against the Braves, ending his 44-game hitting streak.

    1982: Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, Travis Jackson, and Happy Chandler are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1986: The Twins Bert Blyleven records his 3,000th strikeout.

    1994: Cal Ripken, Jr. becomes the second player in M.L. history to play in 2,000 straight games.

    1998: In the Tigers 8-0 win over the Devil Rays, Tony Clark homers from both sides of the plate for the third time this season, setting a M.L. record.

    2002: The Expos trade Cliff Floyd to the Red Sox for two minor league pitchers.

    2005: Rafael Palmerio becomes the highest-profile player to be suspended by MLB for violating the league's drug policy. In the Spring of that year, Palmerio testified before Congress, pointing his finger at them, that he never took steroids.

    1907: Walter Johnson makes his M.L. debut in a 3-2 Senators loss to the Tigers. The first hit he gave up was to another future Hall of Famer, Ty Cobb.

    1921: A jury acquits the eight White Sox players accused of throwing the 1919 World Series. The next day, Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis says the evidence shows the players fixed the games with gamblers and will still be banned from baseball.

    1932: The Cubs fire manager Rogers Hornsby and replace him with Charlie Grimm.

    1970: The Orioles defeat the Royals 10-8. The win is the 23rd straight for the Orioles over the Royals, setting a M.L. record.

    1979: Yankees catcher Thurman Munson is killed when the plane he was learning to fly clips and tree and crashes 1,000 feet short of the runway at the Canton-Akron Regional Airport. He had been taking lessons so he could see his family in Ohio of off days. Munson was 32 years old.

    1981: Bob Gibson, Johnny Mize, Rube Foster, and Ernie Harwell are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1982: The U.S. Postal Service unveils a stamp honoring Jackie Robinson. He becomes the first individual baseball player to appear on a stamp.

    2002: Reds GM Jim Bowden is fined by Commissioner Bud Selig after he made comments comparing a possible baseball strike to the September 11th terrorist attacks.

    2010: The Brewers and Corey Hart agree to a three year deal worth $26.5 million.

    2011: In a 6-0 win over the White Sox, the Yankees Mark Teixeira sets a M.L. record by homering from both sides of the plate for the 12th time.

    1940: During a road trip in Boston, Reds catcher Willard Hershberger is found dead in his hotel room after taking his own life.

    1948: Satchel Paige makes his first M.L. start, pitching seven innings leading the Indians to a 5-3 win over the Senators.

    1957: Pirates manager Bobby Bragan hears on the radio he has been fired and replaced by Phillies third base coach Danny Murtaugh. General Manager Joe L. Brown leaked the news of Bragan's dismissal.

    1961: The Pirates beat the Cardinals 19-0 in the largest shutout in N.L history.

    1967: After a disagreement with manager manager Alvin Dark over player discipline, A's owner Charley Finley fires him. Finley fined and suspended Lew Krasse, Jr. for rowdy behavior on the team plane. First baseman Ken Harrelson is released after he was reported to say that Finley is a menace to the sport.

    1967: National League President Warren Giles announces that the league will oppose any plans to align the leagues into two divisions, saying "the pennant should be decided in the traditional manner". The American League teams showed unanimous support for the plan.

    1979: 51,000 people attend a memorial service at Yankee Stadium for Thurman Munson, who was killed in a plane crash the day before.

    1986: Willie McCovey, Bobby Doerr, Ernie Lombardi, Pirates announcer Bob Prince, and Cincinnati beat writer Earl Lawson are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1987: Twins pitcher Joe Niekro is ejected by umpire Tim Tschida after the discovery of an emery board. Niekro gets a ten game suspension.

    1989: In the first inning of an 18-1 win over the Astros, the Reds set a M.L. record with 16 hits.

    2002: The Angels and Darin Erstad agree to a four year deal worth $32 million.

    2004: Albert Pujols becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit at least 30 home runs in his first four seasons.

    1908: The Cardinals 3-0 win over the Brooklyn Superbas is played with just one baseball.

    1935: Walter Johnson resigns as Indians manager and is replaced by Steve O'Neill.

    1941: In the third inning of the Dodgers 11-6 win over the Giants, Mickey Owens becomes the first catcher in M.L. history to catch three pop-ups in one inning.

    1948: Filling in for Red Barber who was recovering from a bleeding ulcer, Ernie Harwell calls his first M.L. game. He's in the booth to call the Dodgers 5-4 win over the Cubs. For the broadcasting services of the future Hall of Famer Harwell, Dodgers GM Branch Rickey trades minor league catcher Cliff Daper to the Atlanta Crackers.

    1971: In a Texas League game, Tommy Walker pitches a 15 inning no-hitter for the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs in a 1-0 win over the Albuquerque Dukes.

    1980: The Mariners replace manager Darrell Johnson with Maury Wills.

    1982: Joel Youngblood becomes the first player in M.L. history to have hits for two different teams on the same day. Early in the day, he drives home the winning run in the Mets 7-4 win over the Cubs. During the game, he is traded to the Expos. He flies to meet his new team in Philadelphia and collects a hit for the Expos against the Phillies. He collects the hits against two future Hall of Famers: The Cubs Fergie Jenkins and the Phillies Steve Carlton.

    1983: Prior to the fifth inning of the Yankees game against the Blue Jays in Toronto, Dave Winfield kills a seagull with a warmup throw. Ontario police charge Winfield with cruelty to animals and arrested.

    1985: With a 4-1 White Sox win over the Yankees, Tom Seaver records his 300th victory.

    1985: The Angels Rod Carew records his 3,000th hit.

    1990: The Braves trade Dale Murphy to the Phillies for Jeff Parrett Jim Vatcher, and Victor Rosario.

    1993: After being hit by a pitcher, the White Sox Robin Ventura charges the mound after Nolan Ryan. The 46-year old future Hall of Famer puts Ventura in a headlock and punches him six times in the head.

    1994: The Twins Kent Hrbek announces his retirement at the end of the season.

    1996: Earl Weaver, Ned Hanlon, Jim Bunning, and Bill Foster are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    2005: The Orioles fire manager Lee Mazzilli and replace him with Sam Perlozzo.

    2006: Elden Auker, the last living pitcher to face Babe Ruth, dies at age 95.

    2007: Alex Rodriguez records his 500th home run.*

    2010: Alex Rodriguez records his 600th home run.*

    1901: The Orioles Burt Hart punches umpire John Haskell, resulting in him getting a lifetime ban.

    1921: KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh becomes the first to broadcast a baseball game. Harold Arlin becomes the first play-by-play announcer in baseball. The listeners hear the Pirates defeat the Phillies 8-5.

    1937: An Appalachian League game between the Newport Canners and the Johnson City Soldiers ends in the sixth inning when the teams run out of baseballs. Some fans in anger over the premature ending destroy the set of bleachers they had been sitting in.

    1973: The Braves Phil Niekro pitches a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Padres.

    1979: Willie Mays, Warren Giles, and Hack Wilson are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1983: Yankees manager Billy Martin is suspended two games for calling umpire Dale Ford "a stone liar" after their extra innings loss to the White Sox on July 31st. It was the second time this season he was disciplined for abuse towards umpires.

    1984: In a 4-3 win over the Orioles, the Blue Jays Cliff Johnson sets a M.L. record with his 19th career pinch-home run.

    1986: In the third inning of the Giants 11-6 loss to the Reds, Steve Carlton strikes out Eric Davis for his 4,000th career strikeout.

    1992: The A's Jose Canseco is walked for the seventh straight at bat, tying a M.L. record.

    1993: Tony Gwynn records six hits in the Padres 11-10, 12 inning win over the Giants. It's the fourth time this season he had a game of five or more hits, tying the M.L. record also held by Stan Musial and Ty Cobb.

    1999: Mark McGwire hits his 500th career home run.

    2001: Kirby Puckett, Dave Winfield, Bill Mazeroski, and Hilton Smith are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    2005: The Cardinals Albert Pujols becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 30 home runs in his first five seasons.

    2006: The Padres Trevor Hoffman becomes the first in M.L. history to record 30 saves for 11 seasons.

    2007: Tom Glavine records his 300th win.

    2010: The bankrupt Texas Rangers are sold in an auction for $385 million to a group led by team president and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan. They out-bid a group led by Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Jim Crane, who tried in 2008 to buy the club.

    2013: Major League Baseball releases the names of the 13 players suspended for their involvement with performance-enhancing substances from the Biogenesis clinic. Alex Rodriguez receives the harshest punishment with a 211 game suspension. The other players involved get 50 game bans.

    1890: Cy Young makes his M.L. debut. He gets the win in the Cleveland Spiders 8-1 victory over the Chicago Colts. It's the first of his 511 wins.

    1906: After a 4-0 loss to the Indians, the Boston Americans set a new A.L. record by being shutout for the fourth straight time.

    1937: In a 12-6 loss to the Cubs, the Braves become the first team to N.L. history to lead off a game with back to back home runs.

    1946: Hall of Famer Tony Lazzeri dies at age 42.

    1952: In the Browns 1-0 win over the Tigers, 46-year old Satchel Paige becomes the oldest in M.L. history to pitch a complete game shutout.

    1967: In the Orioles 4-0 win over the White Sox, Brooks Robinson hits into his M.L. record fourth triple play.

    1972: In the Braves 4-3 win over the Reds, Hank Aaron hits his 660th and 661st home runs, breaking Babe Ruth's record for homers with one team.

    1973: Roberto Clemente becomes the first Latin-born player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The mandatory five year waiting period was waived for Clemente, who was tragically killed in a plane crash on New Year's Eve. He was helping send relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

    1981: Due to the seven week strike, the players agree to a split-season format.

    1982: The Yankees trade Bucky Dent to the Rangers for Lee Mazzilli.

    1985: The players go on strike. It is the second in-season work stoppage in M.L. history.

    1988: The Pirates Jim Gott balks three times in the eighth inning of their 5-3 loss to the Mets.

    1993: Tony Gwynn records his 2,000th hit.

    1999: Tony Gwynn records his 3,000th hit.

    2002: The Giants Robb Nen records his 300th save in a 11-10 win over the Cubs.

    2003: In a trade for relief pitchers, the Yankees send Armando Benitez to the Mariners for Jeff Nelson.

    2006: The Nationals acquire Livan Hernandez from the Diamondbacks for two pitching prospects.

    2010: The Braves retire Tom Glavine's #47.

    1951: At age 51, Satchel Paige doubles and gets the win as the Miami Marlins beat the Columbus Jets 6-2 in an International League game. 57,000 fans packed the Orange Bowl, the most for a minor league game.

    1978: Mel Allen and Red Barber are the first winners of the Ford C. Frick Broadcasting Award.

    1985: The two day player strike ends when the players and owners agree to increase salary arbitration eligibility from two years to three.

    1988: In a 12-7 win over the A's, the Mariners set a M.L. record with five sacrifice flies.

    1999: Wade Boggs records his 3,000th hit.

    2001: The Braves Greg Maddux increases his consecutive innings pitched without a walk to 70.1, breaking the N.L. record of 68.

    2002: Major League players agree to random tests for steroids starting the next season.

    2004: Greg Maddux wins his 300th game.

    2007: Off the Nationals Mike Bacsik, Barry Bonds hits 756th* home run to pass Hank Aaron for first on the all time list.

    2010: In the Rays 17-11 loss to the Blue Jays, James Shields ties a M.L. record by allowing six home runs.

    1922: In a doubleheader sweep over the Phillies, the Pirates set a M.L. record with 46 hits.

    1957: Dodgers President Walter O'Malley officially announces the Dodgers will move to Los Angeles for the next season.

    1976: The White Sox players wear shorts during the first of a doubleheader against the Royals. After winning the game 5-2, they went back to pants in the nightcap and lost 7-1.

    1988: The Phillies play the Cubs in the first scheduled night game at Wrigley Field. However, rain halts the game in the third inning and does not count as official.

    1998: The Twins Paul Molitor records his 3,000th hit. He joins Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Eddie Collins, and Lou Brock as the only players with 3,000 hits and 500 stolen bases.

    2002: The Braves John Smoltz records his 40th save in the team's 114th game, marking the earliest any reliever had done so in a season.

    2004: The Blue Jays fire manager Carlos Tosca and replace him with first base coach John Gibbons.

    1946: For the first time in M.L. history, all games are scheduled at night.

    1975: In the Dodgers 2-0 win over the Mets, Davey Lopes steals his 32nd straight base, setting a M.L. record.

    1976: Umpire Cal Hubbard is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, becoming the first to be enshrined in two halls. In 1963, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his career with the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers.

    1988: The Cubs defeat the Mets 6-4 in the first official night game at Wrigley Field. The first night game was supposed to be the prior night against the Phillies, but rain called it off in the third inning.

    1998: The Braves Dennis Martinez gets the win in the Braves 7-5 victory over the Giants. It was his 244th win, passing Juan Marichal as the winningest Latin American pitcher in M.L. history.

    2002: Barry Bonds hits his 600th career home run.

    2010: The Mariners fire manager Don Wakamatsu and three coaches. Daren Brown from AAA Tacoma takes over as manager.

    1901: In the Blues (later Indians) 11-7 win over the White Sox, Frank Isbell sets an A.L. record by stranding 11 runners on base.

    1944: The Braves defeat the Reds 2-0 in a game that only takes 57 minutes to play the nine innings. The Braves Charles "Red" Barrett throws just 58 pitches.

    1961: In the Orioles 8-0 win over the A's, Dave Philley records his 21st pinch-hit of the season, breaking the A.L. record.

    1971: The Twins Harmon Killebrew records his 500th home run.

    1974: Believed to be the youngest player in professional baseball history, 14-year old Jorge Lebron makes his debut for the Phillies farm team in Auburn. He plays three games before returning to Puerto Rico to finish junior high school.

    1981: Pete Rose records his 3,631st hit, breaking the N.L. record held by Stan Musial.

    1989: Dave Dravecky, after a 15-month recovery from cancer surgery in his arm, pitches one-hit baseball over seven innings in the Giants 4-3 win over the Reds.

    1995: With one out in the bottom of the ninth and the Dodgers trailing the Cardinals 2-1, Dodger fans start throwing souvenir baseball on the field. It was the third time they did so during the game. The third instance results in the first time a M.L. game was forfeited in 16 years.

    1998: Harry and Hunter Wendelstedt become the first father-son duo to umpire a M.L. game together. Harry was behind the plate with his son Hunter at third in the Marlins 3-2 win in San Diego over the Padres.

    2001: Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau dies at age 84.

    2002: In the Giants 8-3 win over the Pirates, Barry Bonds is intentionally walked for the 46th time this season, breaking the M.L. record.

    2003: The Braves Rafael Furcal becomes the 12th player in M.L. history to turn an unassisted triple play, doing so against the Cardinals.

    1907: The Cardinals Ed Karger pitches a seven inning perfect game in a 4-0 nightcap doubleheader win over the Braves. An agreement between the two teams shortened the game to seven innings.

    1929: Babe Ruth hits his 500th home run.

    1950: The Braves Vern Bickford pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Dodgers.

    1951: The Braves 8-1 win over the Dodgers is the first game televised in color. WCBS-TV broadcasted the game with Red Barber and Connie Desmond on the call.

    1961: Warren Spahn records his 300th win.

    1970: With a 6-5 victory over the Astros, the Phillies Jim Bunning becomes the first pitcher since Cy Young to win 100 games in both leagues. He won 118 games with the Tigers.

    1986: In a 13-4 Reds loss to the Giants, Pete Rose records his tenth five-hit game, a new N.L. record.

    1987: The A's Mark McGwire hits his 38th home run of the season, breaking the A.L. rookie record.

    1991: The White Sox Wilson Alvarez pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Orioles.

    2003: The Cubs Kerry Wood becomes the fastest pitcher in M.L. history to reach 1,000 strikeouts, doing so in just 134 games.

    2008: The Reds trade Adam Dunn to the Diamondbacks for minor league pitcher Dallas Buck and two players to be named later.

    1880: Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson is born in Factoryville, Pennsylvania.

    1948: In a 26-3 win in a doubleheader nightcap over the Browns, the Indians set a M.L. record with 14 different players getting a hit.

    1974: In a 4-2 Angels win over the Red Sox, Nolan Ryan sets the M.L. record with 19 strikeouts.

    1976: The directors of the new Toronto American League franchise announce the team will be known as the Blue Jays.

    1984: Don Drysdale, Pee Wee Reese, Harmon Killebrew, Rick Ferrell, and Luis Aparicio are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1984: The Padres/Braves game is marred by four separate fights. Things started when Braves pitcher Pascual Perez hit Padres hitter Alan Wiggins with the game's first pitch. From then on, Padres pitchers threw at Perez in each at bat with brawls in the second, fifth, eighth, and ninth innings.

    1987: The Tigers acquire pitcher Doyle Alexander from the Braves for a minor league pitcher named John Smoltz.


    1988: The Red Sox beat the Tigers at Fenway 9-4 for their 23rd straight home win, setting a M.L. record.

    1994: Baseball's eighth work stoppage begins. It becomes the longest ever, going for 232 days, resulting in the cancellation of the 1994 postseason and World Series.

    2001: An intention walk of Steve Finley ends the N.L. record streak of inning without a walk by the Braves Greg Maddux. The streak went for 72.1 innings.

    2002: Hall of Famer Enos Slaughter dies at age 86.

    2008: Over a thousand fans attend a memorial service at Turner Field for Atlanta Braves announcer Skip Caray, who died August 3rd. The day would have been his 69th birthday.

    2013: The Phillies Charlie Manuel wins his 1,000th game as a manager.

    1933: In the A's 11-5 win over the Indians, Jimmie Foxx hits for the cycle and sets an A.L. record with nine RBIs.

    1958: The Indians Vic Power becomes the first player in 70 years to steal home twice in a game. The second one comes in the tenth inning to win the game 10-9 over the Tigers.

    1971: The Cardinals Bob Gibson pitches a no-hitter in an 11-0 win over the Pirates.

    1982: Pete Rose makes his 12,365th career at bat, passing Hank Aaron's M.L. record.

    1987: The A's Mark McGwire hits his 39th home run of the season, breaking the M.L. rookie record.

    1998: At age 39, the A's Rickey Henderson becomes the oldest player in M.L. history to record 50 stolen bases in a season.

    1999: The Rangers Ivan Rodriguez becomes the first catcher in M.L. history to record 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in the same season.

    1999: Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese dies at age 81.

    2006: The Braves Matt Diaz ties a N.L. record by recording a hit in ten straight at bats.

    2007: Braves manager Bobby Cox is ejected from a game for the 132nd time, breaking the record held by John McGraw.

    1970: In the Reds 5-4 loss to the Phillies, Pete Rose goes 0-7 at the plate with five straight strikeouts.

    1975: Orioles manager Earl Weaver is ejected in the first of a doubleheader, then tossed again before the start of the nightcap.

    1989: In his second start back from cancer surgery, the Giants Dave Dravecky breaks his arm against the Expos. He collapsed to the ground clutching his arm after a wild pitch throw to Tim Raines.

    1990: The Phillies Terry Mulholland pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Giants. Mulholland faced the minimum, with a throwing error by Charlie Hayes allowing the only Giants base runner.

    1993: A 6-4 Rangers victory over the Indians marks the last of Nolan Ryan's 324 wins.

    1999: In the Angels 10-2 win over the Tigers, Chuck Finley becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to strike out four batters in one inning twice in his career.

    2011: Jim Thome hits his 600th career home run.

    2012: The Mariners Felix Hernandez pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the Rays. It was the third perfect game that season, marking the first time that had happened in M.L. history.

    2012: MLB suspends the Giants Melky Cabrera 50 games for testing positive for a high level of testosterone. Cabrera was the MVP of the All-Star Game earlier in the season.

    1920: The Indians Ray Chapman suffers a fractured skull when he is hit by a pitch in the head from the Yankees Carl Mays. Chapman dies the next day, marking the first on-field death in M.L. history.

    1953: With his wife Claire and his two adopted daughters at his side, Babe Ruth dies of throat cancer at New York's Memorial Hospital. He was 53 years old.

    1954: The first issue of Sports Illustrated is sold at newsstands with the Braves Eddie Mathews featured on the cover.

    1966: Willie Mays hits his 534th home run, tying him with Jimmie Foxx for the most among right-handed hitters.

    1996: At Monterrey, Mexico, the Padres defeat the Mets 15-10 in the first M.L. game played outside the United States and Canada. Mexico native Fernando Valenzuela got the start for the Padres. The game was moved from San Diego due to a conflict with the Republican National Convention.

    2001: The Red Sox fire manager Jimy Williams and replace him with pitching coach Joe Kerrigan.

    2002: By a 57-0 vote, the Players Association sets a strike date of August 30th.

    2005: 87-year old Bobby Bragan manages the Fort Worth Cats of the Central League, making him the oldest to ever be a manager of a professional baseball team. His one day employment is cut short after being ejected in the third inning for arguing balls and strikes.

    2009: In the Yankees 10-3 loss to the Mariners, Derek Jeter collects three hits to raise his career total to 2,675, passing Luis Aparaicio for the most in M.L. history among shortstops.

    2012: M.L. owners unanimously approve the sale of the San Diego Padres to a group led by local businessman Ron Fowler. PGA professional Phil Mickelson is among the group.

    2013: The Phillies fire manager Charlie Manuel and replace him with Ryne Sandberg. Manuel had led the Phillies to five straight division titles, the 2008 World Series title, and was the winningest manager in team history.

    1915: The Braves defeat the Cardinals 3-1 in the first game at Braves Field, which was the first concrete and steel ballpark as well as the first to seat more than 40,000 fans.

    1920: Indians shortstop Ray Chapman dies from his injuries from the prior day, when he was struck in the head by a pitch from the Yankees Carl Mays. It remains the only on-field fatality in M.L. history.

    1933: Lou Gehrig plays in his 1,309th straight game, breaking Everett Scott's record.

    1937: The Cardinals defeat the Reds with the final out being recorded at 12:02 AM in Cincinnati, making it first game in M.L. history to be completed after midnight.

    1948: An estimated 100,000 fans pass by the body of Babe Ruth at Yankee Stadium a day after his death.

    1957: In a game against the Giants in Philadelphia, a foul ball hit by the Phillies Richie Ashburn hits and breaks the nose of Alice Roth, wife of an editor of Philadelphia's Bulletin. In the same at bat, as Roth is being carried out on a stretcher, another foul ball from Ashburn nails her.

    1966: Willie Mays hits his 535th career home run, passing Jimmie Foxx for second on the all time list.

    1973: As a member of the Mets, Willie Mays hits the last of his 660 career home runs.

    1984: After being traded from the Expos the prior day, Pete Rose returns to the Reds lineup for the first time in six years. He goes 2-4 in a 6-4 win over the Cubs.

    1986: In the eighth inning of a 9-5 loss to the Padres in Cincinnati, Pete Rose makes his final M.L. appearance. He strikes out against future Hall of Famer Goose Gossage.

    1990: In the White Sox 4-2 win over the Rangers, Carlton Fisk hits his 328th career home run, breaking Johnny Bench's record for catchers.

    1992: The Dodgers Kevin Gross pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Giants.

    1999: The Orioles Jesse Orosco pitches in his 1,072nd game, breaking Dennis Eckersley's record for appearances.

    2002: The Yankees Alfonso Soriano becomes the first second baseman in M.L. history to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in the same season.

    2006: For the first time in M.L. history, two teams it lead-off home runs in the first two innings of the same game. The Royals David DeJesus and Emil Brown homer in the first and second innings as do the White Sox Pablo Ozuna and Jermaine Dye respectively. The White Sox won the game 5-4.

    2008: In the fifth inning of an 11-8 loss to the Twins, the Mariners R.A. Dickey ties a M.L. record with four wild pitches in one inning. In that same inning, Mariners catcher Kenji Johjima was charged with a passed ball.

    2013: After repeated positive tests for Adderall, Miguel Tejada of the Royals is suspended 105 games.

    1934: Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente is born in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

    1959: The newly formed Continental League names Branch Rickey its president.

    1960: The Braves Lew Burdette pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Phillies.

    1967: Tony Conigliaro's left cheek bone is shattered by a pitch thrown by the Angels Jack Hamilton. The 22-year old would miss the rest of the season as well as all of 1968.

    1979: Willie McCovey hits his 505th career home run, making him the N.L. leader among left-handed hitters.

    1982: Pete Rose makes his 13,941st plate appearance, passing Stan Musial for the most all time.

    1989: Bucky Dent replaces Dallas Green as Yankees manager.

    1998: The Braves Greg Maddux records his 200th win.

    2010: The Braves acquire Derrick Lee from the Cubs for three minor league pitchers.

    1903: For the ninth straight time, the Phillies scheduled game is not played, likely due to weather.

    1921: Ty Cobb records his 3,000th hit.

    1945: In the Phillies 4-2 win over the Reds, Hall of Fame slugger Jimmie Foxx pitches 7.2 innings and giving up just four hits.

    1951: Standing just 43 inches tall, Eddie Gaedel makes his famous at bat, walking on four pitches. The idea of Bill Veeck to play the midget is later outlawed by MLB.

    1957: Giants President Horace Stoneman announces the team has signed a lease to play their home games in San Francisco starting the next season.

    1965: The Reds Jim Maloney pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Cubs.

    1969: The Cubs Ken Holtzman pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Braves.

    1982: The Braves Pascual Perez misses his scheduled start when he gets lost on Interstate 285 trying to get to Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. He arrives to the game ten minutes late.

    1986: The Mariners trade Spike Owen and Dave Henderson to the Red Sox for Rey Quinones, three players to be named later, and cash.

    1992: The Mariners Bret Boone makes his M.L. debut, making him part of the first three-generation family to play in the majors. His grandfather Ray played from 1948-1960 and his dad Bob from 1972-1990.

    2006: The Phillies acquire Jamie Moyer and cash from the Mariners for two minor leaguers.

    2007: With a strikeout of Mark Reynolds for his 2,913th for his career, John Smoltz becomes the all time leader in Braves history.

    2008: The Padres trade Greg Maddux to the Dodgers.

    2010: The Astros trade third baseman Pedro Feliz to the Cardinals for minor league pitcher David Carpenter.

    1974: For the second time in an eight day span, Nolan Ryan strikes out 19 batters. However, the Angel still lose in 11 innings to the Tigers 1-0.

    1985: The Mets Dwight Gooden become the first pitcher in N.L. history to record 200 strikeouts in his first two seasons.

    1989: The Mets trade Mookie Wilson to the Blue Jays for Jeff Mussleman and minor leaguer Michael Brady. The Mets also acquire Frank Viola from the Twins for Rick Aguilera, David West, Kevin Tapani, and two minor leaguers.

    1998: The Cardinals Mark McGwire becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 50 home runs in three straight seasons.
