Chopping With The Braves And Rolling With The Tide
I give up.
Is there ever going to be a questionable call that goes our way?
And what kind of defensive alignment was that on a hail mary play?
After seeing the replay, that facemask wasn't so clear-cut.
I assume those 2 guys are guarding against an underneath pass where they try to keep lateraling the ball
It does. But what's supposed to happen is something like a 3-2-2-4 4 in the endzone, 2 on the five 2 in prevent, 3 rushing the QB. THe idea behind the 2 in prevent is they trail the play. They keep the last person in front of them they join the melee for the ball if it goes to their side.
What failed Detroit was they had no one on the goal line in front of the ball. On a hail mary you always have as a defender someone in front and behind the ball to cover tips. They didn't and it allowed the Packers receiver to sneak in unchallenged for the blal.

In that scenario... I would rush 3, but have 2 cornerback blitz from both edges... Basically keep Rodgers in the pocket and make him get rid of it early. From snap to catch it was like 13 seconds...Way too much time to make something happen
If you do that then it's 5 on 6 in the field and if you have guys in prevent it opens up tons of lanes for a deep pass and lateral options. This play is super rare for a reason. I've seen it go wherre teams pressured a QB and he got off a pass and the defense was out of position. A Hail Mary succeeding comes down typically to poor execution. Rodgers having 30 seconds doesn't matter if they don't leave that guy unmarked. The ball was in the air for 7 seconds. That's 7 seconds for Detroit defenders to get in position around the landing spot. It was just poor execution period.

Or put Calvin Johnson out there.
I've always thought that on clear Hail Mary down, you should have 1 corner blitz from the left side (assuming the QB is right handed). You still have the advantage in the secondary but now the QB is forced to his left where he has to throw across his body and likey forced to get rid of the ball much earlier than anticipated.
Matt Ryan sucks. Lol
Allen Robinson was money for my fantasy team today. And the Titans still won. The best of both worlds!
