I keep coming back and laughing at the Panthers who traded the number 1 overall pick and number 10 overall pick to get the number 1 overall pick in a weaker QB draft. And most likely drafted the second best QB in the draft.

Definitely a head scratcher to draft a 5'10 QB number 1 overall and not have the necessary offensive talent around him to help him succeed.

What made it weird was they traded away McCaffrey and Moore and didn't really replace them. They drafted Mingo for sure, but they pushed chips in multiple places. in the end they traded 2 1s, Christian McCaffrey, DJ Moore and 2025 2nd round pick to get Bryce Young, DJ Johnson, and a pick to be taken (2025 5th) Which is an insane trade. Even if the second 1 wasn't the number 1 overall. The fact that it wound up being the 1 overall made it all time bad. But even without that it was going to be bad. Especially when Moore and McCaffrey basically were the panthers offense. If you make that trade you better not miss. And with Stroud looking much more legit, it seems like they missed their shot (not that I think Stroud would have been this good for Carolina, Houston wound up being a much better team)

Honestly as an outsider, I was ranking last year's QBs
    1. Stroud
    2. Levis
    3. Young
    4. AR15

I don't feel as confident in my Levis ranking. I was charmed by his arm.

Musing over coaching trees. Pretty much every active coach come from the Walsh, Parcells, or Schottenheimer coaching tree. Traditionally in the NFL you consider a coaching tree to be when you're a coordinator, assistant coach, QB coach, etc. under a coach.

Cardinals get there from Gannon to Sirianni to Reich to McCoy to McDaniels to Belichick to Parcells

Falcons get there - Morris to Gruden to Holmgren to Walsh

Ravens get there - Harbaugh to Reid to Holmgren to Walsh

Bills get there same path as above.

Panthers get that - Canales to Bowles to Sparano to Schottenheimer

Bears have the same path as eagles, Eberflus to Reich to McCoy to McDaniels to Belichick to Parcells

Bengals don't get there - THey come from the Shannahan tree which goes up through Dan Reeves and Tom Landry

Browns get there - Stefanski to Zimmer to Parcells

Cowboys get there - McCarthy to Rhodes to Walsh If you demand more than D-Backs coach then add Holmgren.

Broncos get there 2 ways, Payton was a Rhodes Coach before becoming a Fassel coach Fassel to Handley to Parcells

Dan Campbell gets there a weird way - He first was elevated under Joe Philbin - that gets you to either McCarthy or Sherman follow the McCarthy above, or Sherman was under Holmgren which gets you to Walsh

Green Bay - I think doesn't get there because he most likely comes through the Shanahan pipeline, but you can kind of get there, too because he started under Kubiak who came through originally under seifert who was a Walsh guy.

Texans - Ryans goes to Shanny who you can easily say under Kubiak, or you could put him under Gruden who gets you to Holmgren.

Steichen is odd for indy, I think you have to go back to his first NFL gig because he didn't become a coord for a long time. I think he doesn't. I think he comes through the NOrv Turner pipeline which is it's own thing.

Doug Pederson is the Andy Reid tree which gets you KC and Jax

Pierce was hired by McDaniels so you get to BB easy.

Jim Harbaugh came right from college so no tree.

    McVay Shanahan tree

    McDaniels also shanahan

I think you see O'Connell through Jay and Jon Gruden get to Holmgren.

Mayo is a straight line to BB

I think you have to tie Dennis Allen to Dan Reeves

Dabole comes through BB tree aka Parcells tree

I think you have to put Salah in the Shanny pipeline because of Kubiak

    Tomlin to Dungy to Schottenheimer

    Talked about Kyle earlier

Mike McDonald was an assistant under JOhn Harbaugh so that gets your reid.

    Talked about Bowles.

I think you'd put Callahan under Fox, who is Fassel tree, which gets you ot Parcells

Dan QUinn is either Steve Mariucci (Holmgren) or Dennis Erickson (organic)

Why? Levis looked pretty legit when he had time in the pocket. The difference in Levis and Tanne last year was night and day. And while Tanne isn't good, he's a capable enough starter on a team with enough talent.

Tanne is the definition of mediocrity. the best example is look at what happened to AJ Brown when he left Tennessee for Philly. He went from a 1000 yard receiver to nearly a 1500 yard receiver. He's Trent Dilfer of the modern era. Not a bad guy in a pinch but not someone you build around.

My love for levis cooled as the draft approached, I think he still could be a good QB. Right circumstances and whatnot. But he seemed too meatheady. His instincts seemed off. He seemed like the type who'd never be able to command an offense like Brady, Manning, Brees, Rivers, Ryan, etc. He lacked the instincts, the awareness etc. That's not to say he can't get there of course. Players have gone from bad at that in college to great in the pros with the right coaching (Mahomes)

I really have no ill will and wish the best for Levis but as the draft got closer I realized it basically was Stroud and a bunch of questions. Young's size and durability, AR15's ability to process anything mentally, and Levis developing the other skills needed for a QB.

Youngs durability couldn't really be questioned from his college time.

When playing in college behind one of the best lines in the agme. you don't have to worry that much, when you're facing down players where the backup is better than most starters. So on so forth. For example, the best DL Bama faced was Carter, Carter wasn't close to one of the 30 best interior linemen last year. He could wind up there of course, but he isn't there.

He's gonna get blown the **** up over and over again and with his small stature that's a lot of beatings.

Dallas Turner lit up the combine today

4.46 40, only LB or Edge to clear 40 inches in the vertical, and was in the second group for broad jump finishing just 1 behind the leaders.

A lot of mocks have him to Atlanta, I wouldn't hate it if we didn't trade up and got him.

If we can't snag an elite QB then I have no problem with Turner. Edge is a massive hole for the Falcons

It seems like Justin Fields to the Falcons is a foregone conclusion at this point. I imagine it being something like Fields and Bears pick 142 for the Falcons picks 74 and 109 this year and a 3rd and next year that could turn into a 2nd based on goals reached.

    Don’t like it.

Don’t trade jack diddly everyone knows he’s gone.

I’d rather spend on someone else like Wilson without draft capital

Me too. I"d rather sign Wilson and draft Nix or McCarthy in the 2nd. Or even go really wild and gamble on someone like Rattler in the 3rd.

I am certainly rooting for Fields to the Falcons, but I am a Saints fan.

I don’t think it’s a forgone conclusion at all. This is out of control rumor season… the Falcons are betting favorites to land like 5 QBs. Lots of other chatter saying the Falcons internally don’t think he’s a fit. Certainly he doesn’t really fit the usual McVay offense and Robinson said he values processing more than anything which doesn’t fit for Fields. Unless they can get him for a really cheap price and they still draft a QB somewhere to hedge their bets. But the Fields smoke is more media and narrative driven because he’s from the area. Don’t think it happens and I hope it doesn’t.

Also there’s no way in hell the Bears get that much for Fields. No chance.

It’s pretty clear at this point JJ is not making it out of the teens in the first round
