Bird just needs to cut down on the walks. That seems to be his main issue right now. It can be done is the good news

Hitting .293 since the break and .359 in August, very nice to see.

Anyone happen to know what's up with Riley since he's been MIA the last couple games?

Yes - too many walks so far. He has only given up one earned run in two games.

I don't recall anyone saying he was bad. I do recall some posters exercising caution on putting him in the HOF just yet

My two cents on Mallex . . . I don't think his stock has changed much at all since he was acquired over the Winter. Most likely outcome is still that his is a solid 4th OF and not an everyday player on a winning team. A lot depends on his defense, and there just isn't a lot of information we have on his defensive performance this year and whether he's improved on previous concerns in this area.

Do we really have to go through the extra two posts of explaining that I was obviously being sarcastic?

You in particular, exclaimed that he was a slam dunk top 100 prospect, and that we could pencil him in as our starting CF in 2016.

All the "haters" said was to be a bit more realistic.

I think the most likely outcome is something a little better than a 4th outfielder. Maybe the left handed side of a platoon with above average defense. Since the left handed side of a platoon gets most of the at bats, there could be significant value there.

Btw I have a similar view about Bethancourt. But with a projection as the right-handed side of a platoon, there is not quite as much value. I want to hold on to players like Smith and Bethancourt because there is some upside beyond the most likely outcome.

That's more than fair. Guys like Mallex, CB, and Jace definitely have value . . . even if they don't project to be core players for the long-term at this juncture. Each have enough upside that I won't be surprised if one of them emerges as a solid everyday regular. Basically, the Martin Prado path.

I disagree. I think his stock is clearly up. There were serious questions about his league in A+ last year and whether it was the reason his offensive numbers were so high. Hitting like he did in AA this year answered those and sent his stock soaring. His ceiling may not be incredibly high still, but it's higher than it was perceived to be last year. He wasn't even in the top 20 in the Padres' system; many didn't even see him as a 4th OF. I would say everyone now would at least give him a chance to be a solid major league starter.

Sure, whether he's up or down is reliant upon how each of us perceived him this Winter. I primarily use the Fangraphs FV system as a baseline while also looking at other available scouting reports and rankings from Sickels, BA, others. Fangraphs had him as 45 FV this Winter, and for me he's still at 45 FV. For reference, I believe FG / Kiley McDaniel now have Peraza as a 50 FV.

And I would put him at a definite 50. I can't put a guy with his minor league track record at 45.

I've never seen him play and I'm reluctant to grade a guy with one plus-plus tool solely on his minor league stats. If he can play CF and put up a .340 - .350 OBP, he'll have value. With guys like Smith, a lot depends on who is around him.

The comp that gets thrown around a lot by scouts is Kenny Lofton. According to baseball reference, Lofton was a 4+ WAR player till his age 33 season.
