    Peraza debuts for Dodgers

Played second base, batted second, went 1-for-4 (triple) with a walk. Got to tell you, following his progress is going to be painful, but curiosity requires me to see whether or not the Braves' honchos blew it with him or not.

Yeah its going to be painful if he does well. I was/am a little pessimistic about his bat but I think position versatility is highly under rated.

If he's a stud it hurts. But mostly it's about Olivera. Olivera has to be a legit middle of the order guy with at least ok defense at 3b for 4+ yrs.

I think the braves can produce fast 70 defenders pretty quickly if the keep spending internationally.

Bold Prediction: Peraza has a higher total WAR between now and the end of Olivera's contract than Olivera does.

Anybody else look at Olivera's clips and decide he belongs at second?

I thought he was quick, agile and experienced at second. At third - well, I've seen smoother. He probably can play third, but the dude is a 2B.

It surprised me that they were so willing to part with Peraza that easily. Somebody really wanted Olivera with whatever it took.

That was my take when I looked at the videos this winter. When I read about his size, I thought he might be a little unwieldy at second, but when I saw the video he looked very good over there. He would probably be able to hang in on a tough turn really nicely.

He didn't look as comfortable as third, albeit in a couple of short clips, and I suppose there's concern about his arm.

This is gonna be a painful trade for us. When do we get to see the old man? Sometime this year?

Hi value is so much higher if he can play an adequate 2B

Well, except we didn't trade our whole draft for him. Just overpaid.

As I think about this more, I get mixed signals. On the one hand, we're taking on a lot of dead money and every deal gives us "more financial flexibility for 2017."

    OK, but...

On the other hand, we acquired a $60m asset for $30m to play in and beyond that season (leaving the age curve stuff aside) and are told we acquired a potential middle of the order bat at a price we could afford. Of course, the flip side of that is that we overpaid in players (at least, per Peraza's perceived value).

So which is it? More to the point, when do we end the process of dumpster diving for position players and start exercising some of that financial flexibility we've been hoarding like squirrels hoard nuts in winter?

I suppose there's plenty of time. Just kind of tired of the Johns coming back from Plato's Closet with purple tag half-off specials trying to impress us what good deals they made. Gomes, Grilli, KJohnson, CJohnson, JJohnson, EYoung, Uribe, Pierzynski, Maybin, Stults....

When the **** did we become the Seattle Pilots?

I think the Braves are going to continue to use their monetary assets to strengthen the organization as a whole. I think the plan is to just have a farm that continually provides cheap talent once the new stadium opens so it's easier to spend on a risky asset.

Exactly my thoughts. I saw the 220 and said, ooooh, that's a big 2B...but he's lean and lithe, just big. Put 20-25 HRs and a disciplined .280 at 2B, which also protects his arm a little, you've got something.

He's not a kid, either. He's a man. I'll bet he hits those 20, easy.

Not only do I think he plays an adequate 2B, I think he's a good one. The question is actually if they decide they must leave him at third (Peterson?), can he play a decent third? I think so.

But there's no question in my mind he can play 2B.

Perhaps they can bring Frank Wren in as a consultant when it's time to spend the big money.

not sure any of them were intended to be particularly impressive. they are symptoms of a rebuild. I am confused where CJ gets associated with the Johns, and Maybin was part of a hugely winning deal for us. KJ was signed for peanuts and we got something for the future for him. Uribe was good and we also got him for peanuts.

I know it was started as joke but I'm skeptical if Olivera is really 30. After Duque, Livan, Contreras, Furcal (and was it Betemit also?) all lied about their ages, I'm fearful Olivera might be closer to 33-35.
