Braves Farm System Doesn't Measure Up to MLB.com

Jim Callis, writing for MLB.com, has issued a new top 10 farm system ranking -- and the Braves are nowhere to be seen:

even after the Hamels trade, which doubled the amount of actual prospect they have, their system is still lacking, overall.

I think we would be in there if they ranked Olivera as a prospect. That would give us 4 top 100 players and 2 top 40 players.

Not a big surprise with guys like Folty and Whisler losing prospect status. Also we have guys like Jenkins, Sims, and Toussaint who have limitless potential but who haven't yet converted that into dominance. Fried has limitless potential as well but is coming off TJ surgery. Ricardo Sanchez is another top notch talent but had his year derailed by injuries and wasn't particularly effective when he did pitch.

So right now we have a ton of guys with ridiculous potential. All of the group of Jenkins, Sims, Toussaint, Fried, and Sanchez have top of the rotation talent but none have yet been able to capitalize on their talent. I expect at least one of that group to break out next season and become one of the game's top prospects. Hopefully we don't trade that one who is going to do that in the offseason for a bat.

No doubt our farm is good. I can just see someone holding off on putting us super high until some of these guys convert talent into results. A lot depends on what who making the list values more. If they value guys with elite talent and potential then the Braves area as stacked as anyone. If you're someone making a list who is more risk averse you might discount the Braves system a bit because these guys haven't shown they'll capitalize on their potential yet.

I think that's it. The trades have increased the depth of the farm system. But the number of Top 100 prospects that they have brought in from all the trades they made is not that large. Wisler and Toussaint I believe. Folty was on some Top 100 lists in 2014 but seemed to have fallen off them by the time we traded for him.

We do have a large number of very promising players in the rookie leagues. We'll see some of them make the Top 100 lists in a year or so. I see Allard is already at #100 on Callis' list.
