    September 1st:

    1890: The Brooklyn Bridegrooms (later known as the Dodgers) win all three games against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys (later known as the Pirates) in the first tripleheader in M.L. history. Brooklyn won the games by 10-9, 3-2, and 8-4 scores.

    1931: In the Yankees 5-1 win over the Red Sox, Lou Gehrig hits his third grand slam in four days.

    1958: In the Cardinals 1-0 win over the Reds, Vinegar Bend Mizell sets a N.L. record b y walking nine batters without giving up a run.

    1963: In the Cardinals 7-3 win over the Phillies, Curt Simmons becomes the last pitcher in M.L. history to steal home.

    1975: Tom Seaver becomes the first pitcher in M.L. history to record 200 strikeouts for eight straight seasons.

    1987: In the fourth inning of the Astros 3-2 loss to the Cubs, Billy Hatcher's bat shatters and reveals cork being used in it. Hatcher is immediately ejected and is suspended for ten days.

    1998: In the Cardinals 7-1 win over the Marlins, Mark McGwire hits his 56th and 57th home runs of the season, breaking Hack Wilson's N.L. record.

    2007: The Red Sox Clay Buchholz, making only his second M.L. start, pitches a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over the Orioles.

    2014: Four Phillies pitchers combine to throw a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Braves. Cole Hamels pitched the first six innings, Jake Diekman the seventh, Ken Giles the eighth, and Jonathan Papelbon completed the no-hitter in the ninth.

    1955: The Cubs Ernie Banks hits his 40th home run of the season, setting a record for shortstops.

    1965: Ernie Banks hit his 400th career home run.

    1965: With the anticipated move to Anaheim next season, team owner Gene Autry announces the Los Angeles Angels will be known as the California Angels.

    1972: The Cubs Milt Pappas pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Padres.

    1973: The Tigers fire manager Billy Martin.

    1975: In the Giants 7-3 win over the Dodgers, Johnny LeMaster becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit an inside-the-park home run in his first at bat.

    1986: In the Astros 8-7, 18 inning win over the Cubs, the team combine to use a M.L. record 53 players. Billy Hatcher's 18th inning homer off Greg Maddux proves to be the game winner.

    1987: In the Astros 10-1 win over the Cubs, Kevin Bass becomes the first player in N.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate in a game twice in a season. He also did it last month against the Giants.

    1990: The Blue Jays Dave Steib pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Indians. It's the ninth no-hitter in the majors this season, setting the record.

    1996: Mike Greenwell drives in all the Red Sox runs, including the winner in the 10th, in a 9-8 win over the Mariners.

    1999: Cal Ripken, Jr. hits his 400th career home run.

    2001: For the first time in M.L. history, four games on the same day end with a 1-0 final score. In those games, the Yankees beat the Red Sox, Padres beat the Diamondbacks, Astros beat the Brewers, and the Blue Jays beat the Tigers.

    2006: The Indians Kevin Kouzmanoff joins Bill Duggleby in 1898 and Jeremy Hermida in 2005 as the only players in M.L. history to hit a grand slam in their first at bat.

    1894: Taking over for the fired Ned Hanlon, Connie Mack manages the Pirates to a 22-1 win over the Senators. For Mack, it was the first of his M.L. record 3,582 wins his in 53-year managerial career.

    1917: Grover Cleveland Alexander pitches two complete games as the Phillies sweep a doubleheader from the Dodgers by scores of 5-0 and 9-3.

    1928: In a 6-1 A's loss to the Senators, Ty Cobb, serving as player/manager, records the last of his 4,191 career hits. That would be the M.L. record until broken by Pete Rose in 1985.

    1947: The A's Bill McCahan pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Senators.

    1957: In the Braves 8-0 win over the Cubs, Warren Spahn sets a N.L. record with his 41st shutout.

    1961: With two homers from Mickey Mantle in the Yankees 8-5 win over the Tigers, he and Roger Maris become the first teammates in M.L. history to record 50 home runs each in a season.

    1977: Japanese star Sadaharu Oh hits his 756th career home run, passing Hank Aaron for the most in professional baseball history.

    1985: The Angels Reggie Jackson becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 100 home runs for three different teams. He hit 269 with the A's and 144 with the Yankees.

    1990: In a 4-2 White Sox win over the Royals, Bobby Thigpen sets a M.L. record with his 47th save of the season.

    2001: The Cardinals Bud Smith pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Padres.

    2002: The Rangers Joaquin Benoit pitches seven innings on one-hit ball in a 7-1 win over the Orioles, considered the longest save in M.L. history.

    2007: The Mets Pedro Martinez records his 3,000th strikeout.

    2008: Though the official attendance based on tickets sold is announced as 11,211 fans, fewer than 600 are actually at Dolphin Stadium in Miami to watch the hometown Marlins beat the Braves 5-3.

    2013: With a 4-3 win over the Brewers, the Pirates assure themselves of a non-losing season for the first time since 1992.

    1923: The Yankees Sam Jones pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the A's.

    1927: In the Pirates 8-4 win over the Reds, Lloyd and Paul Waner become the first brothers to homer in the same game in M.L. history.

    1928: The Braves begin a record streak of nine straight doubleheaders.

    1941: With a 6-3 win over the Red Sox, the Yankees clinch their third straight A.L. pennant.

    1966: The Dodgers become the first team in M.L. history to draw two million fans both at home and on the road.

    1986: Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg dies at age 75.

    1993: The Yankees Jim Abbott pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Indians.

    1993: In a 6-5 loss to the Reds, the Phillies set a N.L. record by going 151 straight games without being shutout.

    1905: The White Sox Frank Smith pitches a no-hitter in a 15-0 win over the Tigers.

    1912: The Giants Jeff Tesreau pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Phillies.

    1973: After losing three of four to the Cardinals, the Pirates fire manager Bill Virdon and replace him with Murtaugh.

    1981: In a 5-0 Dodgers win over the Cardinals, Fernando Valenzuela ties the N.L. record with his seventh shutout of the season.

    1981: The Yankees fire manager Gene Michael and replace him with Bob Lemon.

    1995: Cal Ripken, Jr. plays in his 2,131st straight game, breaking the M.L. record held by Lou Gehrig. After the game becomes official, the Orioles fans give Ripken a 22-minute standing ovation.

    1996: Four months after surgery for throat cancer, Brett Butler returns to the Dodgers lineup.

    1996: Eddie Murray hits his 500th career home run.

    2005: The Pirates fire manager Lloyd McClendon and replace him for the rest of the season with Pete Mackanin.

    2006: The Marlins Anibal Sanchez pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

    1916: The Giants defeat the Dodgers 4-1 to start their M.L. record 26-game winning streak.

    1923: The Red Sox Howard Ehmke pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the A's. He appeared to have lost the no-hitter in the seventh on a double by Slim Harriss, but he is called out for not touching first base.

    1962: In a 10-1 Dodgers loss to the Pirates, Maury Wills steals four bases and breaks the N.L. record with 82 steals for the season.

    1973: The Rangers fire manager Whitey Herzog and replace him with Billy Martin.

    1975: The Reds clinch the N.L. West with an 8-4 win over the Giants. It's the earliest clinch since divisional play started in 1969.

    1984: Hall of Famer Joe Cronin dies at age 77.

    1993: Mark Whiten of the Cardinals hits four home runs in the second of a doubleheader against the Reds.

    1997: In the Angels 5-4, 15 inning win over the Tigers, 33 players are struck out. 21 of the 30 extra inning outs were strikeouts, including 13 caught looking.

    1998: Mark McGwire hits his 61st home run of the season, tying Roger Maris' record.

    2009: After a loss to the Cubs, the Pirates clinch being the first team in M.L. history to have 17 straight losing seasons.

    2010: In the Brewers 4-2 win over the Cardinals, Trevor Hoffman records his 600th career save.

    1896: A day after sweeping the Louisville Colonels in a tripleheader, the Baltimore Orioles sweep a doubleheader from them, setting the M.L. record with five wins in a two day span.

    1916: In a rain-soaked Shibe Park in Philadelphia, the A's Wally Schang becomes the first player in M.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate. Just 23 fans were in attendance, the smallest crowd in A.L. history.

    1939: With a 12-1 Indians win over the Browns, Bob Feller becomes the youngest 20-game winner in M.L. history.

    1955: The Dodgers clinch the N.L. pennant with a 10-2 win over the Braves.

    1957: In the final game the two teams would play against each other in New York, the Giants defeat the Dodgers at the Polo Grounds 3-2.

    1963: With a 3-2 Braves win over the Phillies, Warren Spahn records his 13th straight season of 20 or more wins, tying Christy Mathewson's record.

    1980: After he was arrested for drugs the prior month, Ferguson Jenkins is suspended by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn.

    1985: Pete Rose collects his 4,191st career hit, tying Ty Cobb's M.L. record.

    1993: The Astros Darryl Kile pitches a no-hitter in a 7-1 win over the Mets.

    1995: With a 3-2 win over the Orioles, the Indians clinch the A.L. Central title, assuring Cleveland of their first postseason appearance since 1954.

    1996: Todd Hundley of the Mets joins Mickey Mantle as the only switch-hitter to hit 40 home runs in a season.

    1996: When the Marlins Gary Sheffield homered off the Expos Pedro Martinez, it was the 4,459th home run of the season, setting a new M.L. record.

    1998: In the fourth inning off the Cubs Steve Trachsel, the Cardinals Mark McGwire hits his 62nd home run of the season, breaking the record by Roger Maris set in 1961.

    2002: With a Rafael Palmerio homer in the sixth inning against the Devil Rays, the Rangers set a new M.L. record by hitting a home run in 26 straight games.

    2008: The Tigers Gary Sheffield hits the 250,000th home run in M.L. history.

    1915: Eddie Plank of the Federal League's St. Louis Terriers wins his 300th game.

    1918: In the earlies conclusion to a World Series, the Red Sox defeat the Cubs 2-1 to win the series in six games. The regular season was cut short due to World War I.

    1928: Ty Cobb makes his final M.L. appearance.

    1956: In the Reds 11-5 win over the Giants, Frank Robinson hits his 38th home run, tying the N.L. rookie record.

    1966: Nolan Ryan strikes out the Braves Pat Jarvis, the first of his 5,714 career strikeouts.

    1985: Pete Rose records his 4,192 career hit, breaking the record held by Ty Cobb.

    1991: Kent Mercker, Mark Wohlers, and Alejandro Pena pitch the first combined no-hitter in N.L. history in the Braves 1-0 win over the Padres.

    1998: With an 8-2 loss to the Braves, the Marlins become the first defending World Series champion to lose 100 games.

    1999: The Twins Eric Milton pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Angels.

    2001: Terrorists hijack four airliners, two striking and destroying the World Trade Center in New York, one strikes The Pentagon near Washington, and the last is crashed in a rural field outside Pittsburgh, PA. Major League Baseball postpones all scheduled games after the attacks.

    2004: Against the Diamondbacks, Barry Bonds hits home runs 699 and 700 of his career. He also walked three times, becoming the first player in M.L. history to draw 200 walks in a season.

    2010: Jim Thome hits his 587th home run, passing Frank Robinson for eighth on the all time list.

    1883: Cleveland's Hugh Dailey pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Philadelphia.

    1925: Dazzy Vance pitches a no-hitter in a 10-1 Brooklyn Robins win over the Phillies.

    1932: The Yankees clinch the A.L. pennant with a 9-3 win over the Indians. Joe McCarthy, who won with the Cubs in 1929, becomes the first manager to win a pennant in both leagues.

    1936: In a 5-2 Indians win over the A's, Bob Feller sets an A.L. record with 17 strikeouts.

    1963: Roger Craig loses his 21st game of the season in the Mets 1-0 defeat to Houston. It was the fifth time this season he was on the losing side of a 1-0 score.

    1965: Willie Mays hits his 500th career home run.

    1968: The Mets Jerry Koosman ties the N.L. record with his seventh shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over the Pirates.

    1971: Frank Robinson hits his 500th career home run.

    1989: Fay Vincent becomes the eighth commissioner of baseball, succeeding the recently passed Bart Giamatti.

    1995: The Tigers Alan Trammel and Lou Whitaker appear in their 1,915 game together, breaking the M.L. record.

    1998: In an 11-10 Cubs win over the Brewers, Sammy Sosa hits his 61st and 62nd home runs, tying the newly set record held by Mark McGwire.

    2001: Commissioner Bud Selig announces all MLB games through September 17th are postponed in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The postponed games will be made up the week after the scheduled end of the regular season.

    2006: In the Padres 10-0 win over the Reds, Mike Piazza hits the last of his M.L. record 396 home runs as a catcher.

    2009: The Mariners Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first player in M.L. history to record nine straight seasons of 200 hits.

    2011: Mariano Rivera records his 600th save.

    2013: With two outs in the ninth, Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter come out of the Yankees dugout to get their Yankee teammate Mariano Rivera, so he can have a final standing ovation from the Yankee Stadium crowd. Rivera gets emotional on the mound before leaving the mound for the final time in the Bronx.

    1968: The Tigers rally for two runs in the ninth to beat the A's 5-4, giving Denny McLain his 30th win of the season.

    1969: The Orioles clinch the first A.L. East title with a 7-3 win over the Indians.

    1986: Usually a catcher, the Giants Bob Brenley plays third base and ties a M.L. record by committing four errors in one inning. He makes up for it with two homers, including the walk-off, to help the Giants beat the Braves 7-6.

    1987: In an 18-3 win over the Orioles, the Blue Jays hit a M.L. record ten home runs.

    1990: The Mariners Ken Griffey, Sr. and Ken Griffey, Jr. become the first father and son in M.L. history to hit back to back home runs in the same game.

    1994: With the vote of 26 of the 28 team owners, the M.L. postseason is cancelled due to the strike. Baseball becomes the first sport to lose an entire postseason due to labor conflict.

    2002: Barry Bonds records his 11th season of 100 RBIs, tying Hank Aaron's N.L. record.

    2008: The Cubs Carlos Zambrano pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Astros in Milwaukee's Miller Park. The game was moved from the Astros home in Houston due to Hurricane Ike.

    2011: The Pirates, with a 3-2 loss to the Cardinals, assure themselves of their 19th straight losing season, setting a new record in American professional sports history.

    1908: On an apparent game-winning hit by the Giants, Fred Merkle failed to touch second base on his way home. He is called out and instead of the Giants winning 2-1 over the Cubs, the game ends in a tie. "Merkle's Boner", as it became known as, costs the Giants the N.L. pennant.

    1955: With a 3-2 win over the Red Sox, the Yankees win the A.L. pennant.

    1957: Hank Aaron's 11th inning home run helps the Braves beat the Cardinals 4-2 and also clinches the N.L. pennant.

    1979: In the tenth inning of the Cardinals 7-4 win over the Mets, Lou Brock steals the last of his 938 career bases.
