    Around Baseball Offseason Thread

Gets started early with the Nats firing Matt Williams. Most people knew it would happen. Now the fish and nits are looking for a new manager

Nats cleaned house: Bench coach Randy Knorr, pitching coach Steve McCatty, hitting coach Rick Schu, third base coach Bobby Henley, first base coach Tony Tarasco, bullpen coach Matt LeCroy and defensive coordinator Mark Weidemaier ... all gone, in addition to Williams.

After all my years of watching baseball, the effect of different managers is still a mystery to me. I think if a guy is really bad, it shows. But for the most part, if you can handle the clubhouse, there's probably not that much difference in the on-field stuff. I frankly don't know how much Williams is to blame for the mess in DC. Only thing I could see is that he sort of had a benign blindness to the meltdown as it was happening.

I think it's pretty evident the Nationals have a lot of guys who are all about themselves.

Found this article a good read. Mike Axisa predicts who will and won't get a QO and which options will be picked up. Seems pretty much on point.

Lackey is pretty likely to get a QO, which would remove him as a potential player of interest for me.

There are a couple others on the bubble, Ian Kennedy and Marco Estrada. I would have interest in those two if they did not get QO. I still think Leake and Latos (neither of whom will get QO) are likely to be near the top of our list. I think Cueto could get an offer from us if the market for his services is soft.

I wonder if we would consider Bartolo Colon for his Harang-like presence. That would be huge.

If I'm Ian Kennedy, I'd be tempted to take a QO if offered. $15.8m for a one year deal in SD is just what the doctor ordered if you're trying to rebuild value.

I can definitely see the Braves looking into the high end of the non-QO market (Price, Cueto, Kazmir, Leake), but I think their chances of landing one of these guys is <25%. My preference would be to shop in the tier below that. This is where I think the best value will be. Doug Fister is probably my favorite name here.

Saw an article today that said the Astros may look to trade or non tender Gattis this offseason. Apparently he only hit .240 but did have 11 triples and 27 home runs. Think that's a little out there to think they non tender him. Could see a trade though

They may try to think whose a better bet; Carter or Gattis. Gattis' stats could put him in line for a big raise in arbitration that they may want to spend elsewhere. All conjecture at this point. I think you're right that if they question his long-term value, they will try to trade him before considering non-tendering.

Well it depends how stat heavy they are. 27 homers but a 284 obp. Wrc+ of 99. They should be able to do better than than that at DH.

And they have enough to fill his roll no problem. But I was just saying it makes 0 sense to non tender him. A right handed hitter who has that much raw power will find a home no problem

I think he'll stick around for quite awhile as a DH who could catch in a pinch. You're right in that there aren't a lot of guys around with his level of raw power. But he doesn't walk. He's become a kind of feast/famine guy. Not a good fielder. But if guys like Tyler Flowers have managed to stick around, there's no reason Gattis can't.

The Astros are likely to discuss non-tendering him this Winter given the $3.4m projection, but I don't think they will actually do it. As a non-tender candidate, his trade value figures to be very minimal. He fits their home park well, and I've heard a couple mentions during the postseason broadcast that their FO likes his clubhouse presence. A year from now, he could be looking at a $6-7m salary through arbitration and it will be real hard for him to justify that number.

Gattis had a poor month at the start of the season, and also made some adjustments to his hitting approach later in the season. I think his second half numbers are more representative of what he can do in that ballpark.

    First half: .241/.268/.444
    Second half: .252/.307/.488

I think the Astros will be happy to keep him.
