    Almost Braves II

Many moons ago over at Scout, somebody put an (uncharacteristically for the forum) excellent thread on players, who were close to being acquired by the Braves. It allowed for lots of thinking, good discussion and some fun. So, although the post season hasn't quite started, which it soon will, it didn't seem like a bad idea to give it a try here.

Ground rules: no value judgment on whether or not the player in question would have been a good fit (you have plenty of other locations for your rants). If you know about other names bandied about in return for trade, then please attempt to include those in your responses.

The most famous of all was clearly Barry Bonds. Obviously, it was multi-player deal. The names that spring immediately to mind are Andres Thomas and Keith Mitchell with at least one other player part of the package. Without verifying, my recollection is that it was so close that it was almost announced. Somebody else can fill in the details as to whether Jim Leyland or Pirates ownership put the 11th hour brakes on the deal.

Have mentioned this a few times before but there were 2 appealing options for Dale Murphy. The Padres had Benito Santiago coming up, which made them eager to unload Sandy Alomar Jr. They offered him with future HOF brother, Roberto, and John Kruk. Not sure what exactly deterred Bobby Cox, other than the lack of "young pitching," but that was a hang-up in another very real trade possibility with the Mets. The Mets were set to offer Howard Johnson, Lenny Dykstra and Rick Aguilera. The Braves had very definite needs at 3B, CF and closer, although it's not believed that the Mets had used Aguilera in that role as he was later quite effectively with the Twins. Cox insisted on David West (the name actually meant something at the time) instead of Aguilera.

During the same time frame, Expos OFs Andre Dawson and Tim Raines offered their services as free agents. They were rebuffed during the high holy days of collusion. Dawson went on to win NL MVP for last place Cubs that year.

One free agent signing was rumored quite frequently, during a period when newspapers, radio and TV were the only sources was LH White Sox starter, Britt Burns. He came from Alabama. This confirms that southeastern priority on talent was not a recent phenomenon. He ended up pitching his entire brief career in Chicago.

More recently, another Bama boy, Jake Peavy, hit a crescendo. Rumors had been loud for years. Will again defer to others on the exact details. Was it that he didn't want Yunel Escobar traded for him or that he was concerned with overall team budget?

We mustn't forget the nearly consummated re-acquisition of Rafael Furcal and the fallout.

    Alex Rodriguez.

Went to sleep a Brave woke up a Ranger. Would have been interesting because it was a year or two before AOL started cutting our payroll. So we likely wouldn't have been able to keep Smoltz, Andruw, etc. As long as we did .

Felix Hernandez. Tom Seaver. We drafted Randy Johnson. More recently we drafted Anthony Rendon.

Zack Wheeler would have been a brave if he lasted to the 7th pick. I know we wanted Robert Stephenson but he was taken right before our pick and we flushed the pick down the toilet.

Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

We were close to acquiring Griffey when he was with the Mariners as well.

Also, AJ Burnett was close to sigNing with the Braves before signing with the Yankees.

The Braves have frequently been tied to trade rumors involving many Astros over the years, including Billy Wagner, Carlos Lee, Brad Lidge, Roy Oswalt, and Hunter Pence among other names.

I remember reading about a plethora of "Andruw to the Red Sox" trade rumors the year before he left with Jon Lester being the centered focus of those talks. Of course this was before Lester broke out and supposedly the Braves wanted Craig Hansen instead due to the cancer concern. Ultimately nothing occurred. Interesting what if though.

Glavine to Boston for Mike Greenwell was big around 89-90.

A Giants pitcher, Shawn Estes, was a.big target.

Supposed standing offer for years on Schilling.

Maybe you mean Chicago White Sox? Was supposed to be AJ straight up for Magglio Ordonez.

Lester lives in Sharpsburg, Georgia, which is between 35-40 miles from Turner Field. He has always wanted to play for the Braves. In 2006, the Braves almost traded for Lester when Andruw Jones was placed on waivers and then-GM John Schuerholz talked to Boston about a deal that would have netted the Braves Lester, Coco Crisp and Craig Hansen.

Ahhh, hadn't heard that one. Of course, JS wouldn't have doing his job properly if he was only talking to just one club.

Mark Buehrle is another name that Atl has been rumored to have had interest in multiple times.

Would actually not surprise me to see us go after him this offseason since he is an innings eater and would be a nice veteran to mentor the younger pitchers.

Ah, yes, IIRC he vetoed the deal because he didn't believe Atlanta had great postseason odds.

Ortiz. Instead, we ended up with Fick.

Didn't he go from Boston to the Cubs or vice versa?

I remember watching a random ESPN classics game from around that time and they were discussing during the game how Glavine's elbow problems had prevented the Braves from trading him.

Interesting! Didn't realize that they were actually giving serious consideration to moving Glavine. Reports were that Cox wouldn't even listen to offers for the pitching prospects. Supposedly there had been several offers for Avery as well.
