Wieters a great match for ATL: Veteran C to help their pitching staff, good hitter, Ga. Tech ties -- and they have protected 1st round pick.

No
He's 30 and will be expensive. We passed on Mac for similar issues, and Wieters isn't close to being as good as Mac was. If the Yankees are interested in him. I'd ask about McCann for sure. He obviously doesn't have a ton left in the tank, but should be had for much less overall cash. Probably could get him for Grilli, however that needs to happen.

I say he doesn't get Mac money due to his injury history (and given he hasn't been nearly as good/consistent as Mac). And it's at least somewhat possible we could get Wieters at a discount given his injury history and his tis to Atl. I doubt it happens, but if he'd sign for 4/60 or somewhere thereabouts, I would definetly do it, assuming we move some money around 1st.
But I also do lIke the idea of trading for Mac as well.
Outside of OBP there is a lot to like with Weiters. Good defender, 20 HR power, and he is a switch hitter. He has only has 1 major injury and I view having 1 year off a plus since that's one year less of a beating his body has taken from the grind of catching. I wouldn't break the bank for him but I would be interested for the right price. I think if he gets a qualified offer he takes it.

I wonder if the Yanks would eat a couple million a year on Macs contract. 17 per for the next 3 seasons is alot.
I wouldn't be shocked to see the Braves give another O's over 30 FA 4 years at market average prices.

Happy to see the report that BAL will (supposedly) make Wieters a QO. That should greatly reduce any chance the Braves will pursue him seriously. Iannetta, Avila, and Navarro give you similar performance at what's likely to be a MUCH lesser cost. A platoon with Saltalamacchia and [Insert name of RHH backup Catcher] might even get you close to Wieter's production at a MUCH, MUCH lesser cost.
I'm fine with him...depends on the price. But with his agent it's not happening.
I'd consider going 3/30 with a team option and incentives. But that's never happening.
I'd go 3/35 or even 4/42 honestly, but it won't happen and he will get much more in my opinion.
I'm personally all on board for a blockbuster deal for Lucroy, but I think we get Wieters or stick with Beth.
With an early 2nd round pick I don't see us giving that up for Weiters. I'd rather go after Lucroy.

Isn't he one of the more bad defensive catchers in the league? Well I guess since we took a chance on AJ might as well

And would be a perfect bridge to Herbert or Morales (if he can stick behind the plate) or a potential international signee. Not to mention he'd eliminate the need to spend on a veteran backup/caddy for Bethancourt. IIRC, Wieters has always drawn good reviews for the way he handles a staff - which would help with all the young pitching.
Not sure the brass will want to part with the pick he'll cost, but if you could get him at 3/$45 million it wouldn't be the worst signing in the world IMO.
Everybody wants to knock his 100 OPS+ last season, but if you'll look deeper, that was 14% better than "average" in 2015.
"At the plate, Wieters was solid, albeit unspectacular, slashing .267/.319/.422 with eight homers in 282 plate appearances. That batting line translates to a park-adjusted OPS of 100 — exactly league average — which is in line with Wieters’ career marks. (He was off to a much better start in 2014 before tearing the UCL in his throwing elbow.) While league-average production isn’t the most exciting concept in the world, it’s extremely valuable when coming from behind the plate; the league-average catcher in 2015, for instance, hit just .232/.295/.383, leaving them about 14 percent below league-average production."

Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...
Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?
Wouldnt wanna spend our protected pick on Wieters but if they dont go for one of the top 3 bats, or the aces, not sure what else you spend it on, gotta spend money.
With Boras as his agent, doubt it happens though.
No way I'd give up our high 2nd round pick, which will probably end up in the 35-40 range, plus the money and years he will command, for him. Pass.
